Job description

Hornblower is seeking a FT Deckhand for our City Ferry operation in Dauphin Island AL.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower's RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

The Deckhand monitors the waterway and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation. This position also handles mooring lines to dock or undock the vessel and transit locks while performing custodial and maintenance tasks as directed, all while providing a high level of customer service to ferry riders.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Remain true to and champion the Company's Core Values and Code of Conduct.
  2. Safety First - Safety shall remain the highest priority at all times. Be an active advocate of, and participant in, the HMS Safety Culture.
  3. Consider reliability and efficiency with regard to Company operations.
  4. Monitor river, vessel, and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation.
  5. Participate in onboard training and routine drills.
  6. Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.e., fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vests).
  7. Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  8. Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic material in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) (as required).
  9. Memorize and carry out assignments on the Watch Quarter Station Bill.
  10. Know location of all safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire and bilge pumps, fire hoses, lifejacket lockers, emergency lighting, first aid supplies, and rescue equipment.
  11. Know proper lifejacket donning methods.
  12. Participate in the operation of the vessel within the legal requirements of the USCG and other pertinent regulatory agencies under the supervision of the Captain.
  13. Monitor safety issues and report hazards to the Captain for correction.
  14. Participate in Safety, Seamanship, and other training as required.
  15. Participate in drills as directed by the Captain.
  16. Ensure that safety equipment is provided and properly used for all tasks involving physical hazards.
  17. Assist, under the direction of the captain, with the safe mooring, docking of the vessel in a variety of weather and water stage conditions.
  18. Assist with routine maintenance, painting, and clean-up as instructed by the Captain.
  19. Stay aware of guest service and safety issues and provide regular and dependable feedback to the Captain.
  20. Understand the Employee Handbook and adhere to policies.
  21. Understand and comply with the Safety Management System (SMS).
  22. Understand and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  23. Maintain Crew Qualification binder.
  24. Collaborate with other HMS personnel to remain attentive to regulatory requirements and alert to changes.
  25. Assist Captain in ensuring compliance with all applicable safety and environmental regulations.
  26. Assist Captain in ensuring vessel is in an inspection-ready condition at all times.
  27. Present professional customer service and appearance to all clients, internal and external.
  28. Responsible for handling money and balancing deposits/money bags.
  29. Generate settlement and recap reports as required.
  30. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  1. HS Diploma
  2. Valid First Aid/CPR Certification, and/or ability to obtain and maintain
  3. Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card) if applicable for the vessel, and/or ability to obtain and maintain
  4. Valid Driver's License
  5. Copy of DD214, if Veteran status
  6. Ability to effectively interact with passengers, guests, and fellow employees.
  7. Ability to work in a fast-paced, quickly-changing environment
  8. Basic computer skills
  9. Previous customer service experience preferred
  10. Must be at least 18 years of age

Salary: $15/hour
