Car Marshall - City Ferry - Dauphin Island

Hornblower is seeking a Seasonal Car Marshall for our City Ferry operation in Dauphin Island, Alabama.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower’s RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

The Car Marshall is responsible for interacting with ferry riders to coordinate their vehicle direction and queuing to appropriate areas of the vessel. The Car Marshall collects tolls, counts customers, sells ticket books, and also maintains applicable paperwork while providing a high level of customer service.

  • Monitor waterway for vessel arrival and departure for most accurate vehicle and passenger queuing.
  • Monitor vehicles and passengers to ensure safety during times of large crowds.
  • Participate in onboard training and routine drills.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.e., fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vests) in the event of an emergency.
  • Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other hazardous or caustic materials in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
  • Report safety-related concerns.
  • Collect tolls and sell ticket books, using credit card systems at times.
  • Ensure ticket authenticity and maintain required documentation for tolls collected and tickets sold.
  • Guarantee cash authenticity by utilizing available means, e.g., fraud detection pen.
  • Report vehicle and pedestrian counts to the Captain as directed.
  • Assist in boarding and disembarking of passengers and vehicles.
  • Direct check-in vehicles into appropriate lanes according to destination, vehicle type, and size.
  • Direct vehicles to proper areas upon disembarkation from the vessel/ramp.
  • Assist with training of employees as requested.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Participate in meetings, training, drills, and safety audits as required.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification, and/or ability to obtain and maintain
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Copy of DD214, if Veteran status
  • Ability to effectively interact with passengers, guests, and fellow employees
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, quickly-changing environment
  • Ability to process calculations frequently and continuously
  • Basic computer skills and experience with tablets or iPads beneficial
  • Previous marine industry experience preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years old
