General description

Responsibilities
- Understand and comprehend duties and responsibilities given by the Captain/Mate.
- Understand required deckhand skills and maintenance responsibilities.
- Keep the non‑engineering areas of the vessel in good condition; clean inside and outside of the boat, scrub and wash floors, wash windows, polish brass equipment, wash and paint exterior decks and bulkheads.
- Cook meals and keep the galley clean.
- Handle the tug’s working lines and mooring lines, and the towing gear as experience dictates; manage hawsers, cables, bridles, shock lines and retrieving lines.
- Throw heavy lines and secure large working lines quickly.
- Regularly check barges and pump out any leaking barges; set out navigation lights and check them regularly.
- Maintain and operate deck equipment when docking or departing.
Qualifications
- Maritime background and a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card issued by Homeland Security).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Learn and comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures.
Essential functions
- Scrub down the boat after each trip.
- Ensure all lines are secured and the vessel is ready for sea as soon after it leaves the dock as possible.
- Check the proper operation of the masthead, stern and sidelights and report to the Captain/Mate at sunset; also check the anchor light when used.
- Check protective fenders when the boat is landing, take them in upon departure and adjust them whenever necessary.
- Sweep and mop the interior of the vessel, wipe bulkheads (walls) and overhead (ceiling) daily after each trip.
- Wash dishes, pots, pans and cutlery after each meal and return these items to their proper location; clean stove and oven once a week.
- Clean and defrost refrigerator at least once a week and freezer at least once a month; arrange food supplies to prevent damage at sea.
- Scrub toilet heads daily; scrub shower stall and shower rack once a week.
- Empty all trash and garbage daily; empty and clean ashtrays; sweep throughout the vessel daily.
- Assist the engineer as required.
- Splice and care for all lines.
- Apply to the U.S. Coast Guard for a seaman’s card (Merchant Mariners Document) and furnish documentation.
- Check all life preservers to be properly stowed.
- Physically able to lift, carry and work with heavy rigging; perform duties under adverse conditions.
- Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, climb or balance.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, 25 pounds, 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Handle multiple tasks within a given day.
- Fully conversant with emergency procedures and life‑saving equipment onboard the vessel.
