Job summary

Federal Express Corporation is seeking a Database Advisor to lead design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise databases in a hybrid role across FedEx campuses in Memphis, TN; Plano, TX; and Pittsburgh, PA.

You will guide large-scale database development, ensure data quality, and collaborate with business customers, developers, and support teams to deliver scalable, cost-efficient cloud solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems, or equivalent
• Extensive database administration and design experience in enterprise environments
• Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL concepts, data modeling, indexing, and query tuning
• Hands-on PostgreSQL expertise; Google AlloyDB experience highly preferred
• Cloud database infrastructure with Terraform; experience with Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner
• Experience managing horizontally scalable cloud DB architectures; high availability and global consistency
• Experience with database migrations using DMS, Datastream, or similar tools
• Proficiency in Python, Bash, or Go for automation and tooling
• Experience with CI/CD for databases (Flyway, Liquibase, GitHub Actions, GitLab)
• Experience with observability/monitoring (Cloud Monitoring, MQL, Cloud Logging) and FinOps practices

Job description

This is a hybrid position located in Memphis TN, or Plano TX, or Pittsburgh PA. Candidates must live within 50 miles of the campus location. Employees will be required to work at the FedEx campus location several times per week.

Essential Functions

About the Role

The Database Advisor will provide technical leadership in the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise database solutions. This individual will support large-scale database development and administration efforts, perform root cause analysis, ensure data quality and appropriate database usage, and serve as a key liaison between business customers, development teams, and support groups. The ideal candidate has strong database administration experience, understands both relational and NoSQL design concepts, and can help drive scalable, reliable, and cost-effective database solutions in a modern cloud environment.

• Provide leadership in the design, implementation, maintenance, and support of database solutions across enterprise systems and applications.
• Perform root cause analysis for database issues, performance concerns, outages, incidents, and recurring system problems.
• Support coding, testing, documentation, and implementation efforts for multiple large-scale database and development projects.
• Partner with business customers, development teams, infrastructure teams, and support groups to understand requirements and deliver effective database solutions.
• Ensure database quality control, auditing, governance, and appropriate use of data across supported environments.
• Lead or support database migrations, upgrades, enhancements, and modernization efforts with a focus on stability, scalability, and minimal business disruption.
• Design, review, and optimize database structures, data models, schemas, queries, indexes, and performance-related configurations.
• Support relational and NoSQL database environments, including design considerations for scalability, availability, and maintainability.
• Develop and maintain documentation related to database architecture, processes, standards, procedures, and project deliverables.
• Serve as a team lead liaison between business, development, and support teams to ensure clear communication, alignment, and successful delivery.
• Coach, mentor, and support the development of less experienced DBAs and technical team members.
• Monitor database environments, troubleshoot errors, review logs, and identify opportunities to improve reliability, performance, and operational efficiency.
• Support cost optimization, capacity planning, and efficient use of database and cloud resources.
• Ensure deliverables are completed accurately, on time, and in alignment with business and technical requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong experience with database administration, database design, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance optimization across enterprise environments.
• Experience supporting large-scale production database environments, enterprise applications, and modernization initiatives.
• Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL database concepts, including data modeling, schema design, indexing strategies, query optimization, and database performance tuning.
• Deep expertise with PostgreSQL, including enterprise features, extensions, vacuum tuning, and performance optimization. Experience with Google AlloyDB is highly preferred.
• Strong experience provisioning and managing cloud database infrastructure, including Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, and related Google Cloud database services using Terraform.
• Experience designing and managing horizontally scalable cloud database architectures, including Google Cloud Spanner, with a focus on high availability, global consistency, and resilience.
• Hands‑on experience planning and executing minimal‑downtime database migrations utilizing Google Cloud Database Migration Service (DMS), Datastream, Oracle GoldenGate, or comparable migration technologies.
• Experience evaluating and migrating legacy relational database platforms such as Oracle or SQL Server to cloud‑native PostgreSQL or AlloyDB environments.
• Proficiency with Python, Bash, or Go for database automation, operational scripting, maintenance, and custom tooling.
• Strong understanding of schema migration tools and CI/CD database deployment pipelines, including Flyway, Liquibase, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, or similar deployment frameworks.
• Experience implementing database observability, monitoring, alerting, and dashboarding using Google Cloud Monitoring, Monitoring Query Language (MQL), Cloud Logging, Error Reporting, or comparable observability platforms.
• Experience optimizing cloud database infrastructure costs through capacity planning, rightsizing, storage optimization, autoscaling strategies, and cloud commitment planning (FinOps).
• Familiarity with cloud security best practices, including IAM database authentication, Cloud KMS, Customer‑Managed Encryption Keys (CMEK), encryption at rest, and secure database access controls.
• Experience supporting containerized database environments utilizing Kubernetes (GKE) and cloud‑native deployment patterns.
• Ability to perform complex root cause analysis, troubleshoot enterprise database issues, and implement long‑term corrective actions.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, documentation, and technical communication skills.
• Ability to partner effectively with business users, application development teams, infrastructure engineers, support organizations, and technical leadership.
• Experience establishing database governance, quality control, auditing standards, and data management best practices.
• Demonstrated leadership, ownership, and mentoring skills with the ability to guide junior DBAs, manage competing priorities, and successfully deliver enterprise database initiatives.

Bachelor's degree/equivalent in computer science, engineering, or information systems or related field and/or equivalent formal training or work experience.

Five (5) years' work experience in information technology or engineering environment.
