As a Data Scientist at M. A. Mortenson Company in Minneapolis, MN (onsite), you will help model complex business problems and turn data into operational insights. The role supports a data-driven business culture, combining statistical methods, algorithmic approaches, mining, and visualization to improve business performance.
You will develop and execute data plans to obtain, analyze, and translate findings into practical recommendations. From building predictive models to evaluating operational changes, this position emphasizes consistent review of program data and corrective action informed by trends.
Responsibilities
- Understand the assigned business challenge and create a plan to identify, obtain, and analyze the data needed to improve business performance
- Extract and synthesize information from internal systems, industry reports, public information, field reports, and other data sources to find statistical relationships and convert them into internal operational insights
- Perform statistical analyses, randomized controlled trials, and predictive modeling
- Apply and integrate statistical and mathematical modeling to work with complex, high-volume data from multiple sources
- Develop, analyze, and model operational, economic, management, and other organizational data
- Quantify competitive performance across business segments
- Evaluate potential operational changes and assess their impact
- Design new approaches and methodologies, ideally using AI & ML algorithms when appropriate
- Review program data consistently to recommend corrective action when necessary, based on current trends and collected information
- Collaborate effectively with people across diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, applied mathematics, data science, data analytics, or a related discipline; graduate degree preferred
- Minimum 1-4 years of experience in data science
- Proficiency with data mining, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis
- Full proficiency in SQL, Python, R, or similar coding languages and platforms
- Experience with Fabric and Power BI
- Basic familiarity with Salesforce, Oracle, and GL/Financial data
- Ability to concisely present and explain large amounts of information and complex methods
- Analytical thinking with strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience following complex instructions
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Willingness to advance business ideas that may be unstructured and lack clearly defined outcomes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening and openness to diverse input and feedback

Compensation: USD 92,300 - 138,500 per year.
