Job summary

The Mutual Group is seeking a Data Science Intern for Summer 2027 with hybrid/remote options within the United States. You will gain hands-on experience applying analytics to real property & casualty insurance problems, collaborating with actuarial and data teams on model monitoring, exploratory analysis, and documentation.

This mentorship-driven program develops technical and professional skills, culminating in a capstone presentation showing business value.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate (junior/senior) or graduate degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, analytics, economics, or a related field.
• Comfort with at least one programming language, preferably Python or R.
• Basic SQL skills, or willingness to learn SQL quickly.
• Coursework or project experience involving statistics, regression, machine learning, data visualization, or applied analytics.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and interest in applying analytics to real business problems.
• Interest in insurance, financial services, risk analytics, or business decision support.
• Strong analytical thinking and quantitative skills.
• Exposure to version control (e.g., Git), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau), or model monitoring concepts.

Responsibilities

• Support exploratory data analysis for pricing, underwriting, claims, or operational analytics use cases.
• Build or enhance repeatable reporting outputs such as model monitoring summaries, rating variable distributions, actual-versus-expected analysis, or lift-chart support.
• Help document modeling datasets, feature logic, assumptions, limitations, and data lineage.
• Contribute to code cleanup, reusable functions, testing scripts, and version-controlled project organization.
• Prepare a capstone presentation connecting technical work to business value.
