About Over J Consulting

Over J Consulting works with utility and infrastructure clients to connect engineering information, operational processes, data and technology. We help teams turn disconnected information and manual workflows into reliable, practical tools that support better decisions.

We are looking for a hands-on Data Integration Engineer who can understand how an existing process works, identify what needs to improve and personally build and support the solution.

You will join a small delivery team, report to the CEO and work directly with analysts, engineers, operational users and clients. The role

requires independent technical execution, clear communication and a collaborative approach.

What you will do

  • Analyze existing spreadsheets, scripts, databases and workflows. Trace where information comes from, how it is transformed and how people use the output.

  • Diagnose inherited processes, identify dependencies and failure points, and make controlled improvements while preserving approved business rules.

  • Write and maintain Python scripts, SQL queries and Excel or Power Query transformations to combine, clean, map and reconcile data from different sources.

  • Connect approved systems using APIs, database connections or automated file transfers. Address authentication, changing data structures, retries, duplicate records and incomplete runs.

  • Identify missing, invalid, conflicting, stale or misidentified data. Document exceptions and work with the appropriate business or engineering owner to resolve them.

  • Test changes, reconcile inputs to outputs and use version control so work is repeatable and maintainable.

  • Document setup, dependencies, data definitions, operating steps, quality checks and recovery procedures so another colleague can run and support the workflow.

  • Explain findings, limitations and recommendations clearly. Lead focused client reviews to clarify questions, discuss tradeoffs and agree on next steps.

  • Coordinate with Engineering, Operations and IT. Raise unresolved business rules, delivery risks and capacity concerns early. Route engineering decisions to the appropriate technical authority.

What you must bring

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience in data integration, workflow automation, data engineering or software delivery, including recent hands-on development.

  • Practical Python experience, including the ability to read, debug, modify and test existing code written by someone else.

  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, data types, null handling, duplicate detection, validation and reconciliation.

  • Advanced Excel skills and experience creating repeatable transformations with Power Query or an equivalent tool.

  • Practical experience connecting systems or moving data through APIs, database connections or automated file transfers.

  • Personal delivery of at least two operational integrations or automations, including an inherited workflow you improved and supported. You should be able to explain your contribution, checks and results.

  • Experience using Git or equivalent version control, testing changes and documenting work for others.

  • Ability to independently execute scoped work, ask precise questions, communicate issues early and respond constructively to review.

  • Current residence within a reasonable commuting distance of Downtown Los Angeles and the ability to meet the required in-person schedule.

A relevant degree is useful. Equivalent demonstrated professional experience is also valued. The five-year minimum applies to your overall relevant experience, not separately to each tool.

Experience that strengthens your application

IoT and telemetry experience is a valued differentiator. We welcome examples of connecting or supporting device data and handling asset identity, timestamps, units or data freshness. Lack of IoT experience will not disqualify an otherwise qualified candidate.

Other useful experience includes utilities, infrastructure, manufacturing or regulated environments; asset, materials or supply-chain data; SAP, Maximo or GIS; Power BI, Power Apps or SharePoint; PDF/OCR; and cloud or container environments.

What success looks like

  • First 30 days: Independently operate one selected existing workflow using accepted checks and recovery instructions.

  • By day 60: Operate a second workflow and complete a tested handover.

  • By day 90: Demonstrate an approved, measurable operational improvement.

Assignments will have defined scope, required access and reviewer support.
