Job summary

ExcelGens, Inc. seeks a Data Center Technician to support servers at customer data centers with strong hardware, IT, and cabling skills. You will document procedures, contribute to knowledge bases, and collaborate with internal and external teams to drive tasks to completion.

The role requires independent work, safety compliance, and a customer-focused approach. You will participate in safety training and support ongoing data center operations and improvements.

Qualifications

• 5–7 years of experience as a Data Center Technician.
• Associate degree or higher in a relevant field is preferred.
• Certifications such as CompTIA A+/Server+, CCENT/CCNA are advantageous.
• Scripting: PowerShell, Python, or Bash is a plus.
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and safely climb ladders.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, stage, set up, and perform data center hardware startups and shutdowns following procedures.
• Assist and guide other technicians on complex tasks.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, identify root causes, and replace faulty components with minimal disruption.
• Verify grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling meet standards via post-execution checks.
• Decommission hardware for changes and refreshes per SOPs, including memory upgrades and OS rebuilds.
• Escalate incidents as needed and communicate with management.
• Participate in safety briefings and mandatory training.
• Maintain safety around equipment use, lifting, and electrical hazards.
• Collaborate with teams and share information to improve workflow and reduce impact.
• Complete tickets efficiently while meeting KPIs and SLAs.

Data Center Technician 3 (S3)

About the Role

We are seeking a Data Center Technician to support servers at customer data centers. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills in hardware, IT, and cabling management, with excellent analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a results-driven attitude.

Technicians are expected to provide feedback, create technical documentation, and contribute to knowledge libraries, including KB articles, SOPs, and lessons learned. The role also requires the ability to work independently, collaborate with internal and external teams, and drive initiatives to completion.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, stage, set up, and perform data center hardware startups and shutdowns, including racks, hard drives, and switches, following checklists, guides, and standard procedures.

• Assist and provide guidance to other technicians on challenging or complex tasks.

• Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting, identify root causes, and replace faulty components with minimal disruption.

• Conduct post-execution quality checks to verify grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling meet safety and deployment standards.

• Decommission hardware for simple changes and refreshes, including memory upgrades and OS rebuilds, following standard procedures.

• Communicate, report, and escalate incidents to appropriate management.

• Participate in daily safety briefings and complete required safety training.

• Follow safety procedures related to equipment use, lifting, electrical hazards, ladders, and rolling stairs.

• Contribute to a positive team environment by sharing information, attending meetings, and staying updated on team activities.

• Proactively share relevant information to improve workflow and minimize operational impact.

• Complete assigned tickets efficiently while meeting or exceeding established KPIs and SLAs.

• Take ownership of service quality, task completion, and the overall data center environment.

• Maintain a strong customer focus and understand the business impact of assigned tasks.

Requirements

• Exceptional server hardware knowledge with a deep understanding of component and system failures.

• Ability to assist with failure analysis of field issues.

• Experience tracking server fleet health and investigating emerging failure trends.

• Strong knowledge of IPMI utilization for diagnostics.

• Experience administering diagnostic tools, testing software, and firmware updates.

• Experience with real-time issue resolution during new deployments.

• Experience with Windows Server OS and WinPE administration.

• Linux PXE services experience is a plus.

• Basic Linux and Windows scripting experience.

• Network troubleshooting knowledge across Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3.

• Experience with virtual machine setup and environment configuration.

• Ability to work autonomously and within local or geographically dispersed teams.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5 7 years of experience as a Data Center Technician.

• Associate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience preferred.

• CompTIA A+ or equivalent experience.

• CompTIA Server+ or equivalent experience.

• CCENT or equivalent experience.

• Windows OS experience.

• CCNA certification preferred.

• MCP/MCSE certification preferred.

• Scripting experience preferred: PowerShell, Python, or Bash.

• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds when necessary.

• Ability to safely climb ladders when necessary.

• Ability to wear personal protective equipment correctly.

• Ability to stand and walk throughout the facility for extended periods.

• Ability to use hands to handle tools and equipment, make precise adjustments, bend or twist, and perform repetitive movements as required.
