Job summary

TEKsystems is seeking a Data Architect to oversee complex data projects on a unified Azure-based platform. You will provide expert architectural guidance without hands-on execution, ensuring partner-delivered work aligns with enterprise standards and strategic goals.

The role requires strong Databricks expertise, the ability to review partner architectures, and effective collaboration with distributed engineering teams. It is a hybrid contract position based in Long Island City, NY.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience overall, with strong Databricks hands-on
• Deep hands-on knowledge of Databricks as a primary data platform
• Experience with Airflow for orchestration and DBT for transformation
• Experience building ingestion pipelines using APIs, databases, files and Databricks-native tools
• Strong understanding of Medallion Architecture, data products, semantic modeling and data quality frameworks

Responsibilities

• Provide expert oversight of data projects delivered by external partners, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards
• Review partner architecture, code, data models and pipelines for quality and reusability
• Represent the internal data team in project discussions and governance meetings
• Monitor progress with implementation partners and stakeholders, flag risks or quality concerns
• Lead architectural governance and ensure long-term vision is reflected in designs

Top Skills' Details Experience: 8+ years overall, including strong hands-on Databricks experience.

Strong experience with Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, SQL and Python/PySpark.

Hands-on experience with Apache Airflow for orchestration and dbt Core for data transformation and modeling.

Description

Our client is undergoing a significant business and technology transformation, standardizing on Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud platform and building a new Unified Data Platform. As part of this initiative, they are seeking a Data Architect to act as a crucial internal leader. You will not be responsible for hands‑on project execution, but rather will provide expert oversight for projects being delivered by their external partners. Your mission is to ensure these complex data projects are architected and delivered according to our precise technical standards and strategic goals, acting as our representative on the ground.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Core Platform Expertise: Deep, hands‑on knowledge of Databricks as a primary data platform.

Data Tooling: Proven experience with data pipeline and transformation tools, specifically Airflow and DBT.

Corporate Acumen: Demonstrated experience working within large, complex corporate environments. You must be process‑oriented and understand how to navigate a large enterprise effectively.

Strategic Thinking: Must be a strategic thinker capable of "connecting the dots" between technical implementation, business process, and strategic objectives. This is not a heads‑down technical role.

Architectural Oversight: Serve as the lead internal technical authority on data projects, reviewing partner‑created architecture, code, and technical designs to ensure they align with our long‑term vision and established guidelines.

Partner Governance: Actively participate in meetings with implementation partners and internal business stakeholders, monitoring progress and ensuring adherence to our operational principles.

Risk & Quality Management: Proactively identify and flag any deviations, risks, or quality concerns in partner deliverables, promptly alerting internal leadership to ensure corrective action can be taken.

Strategic Representation: Represent the internal data team in all project‑related discussions, ensuring our voice is heard and our standards are met without requiring direct management of partner resources.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $87.00/hr.
