Job summary

Smarty is seeking an Data Acquisition & Quality Specialist Intern to join the Data Foundations team in our Orem office. This paid internship runs January 2027 through August 2027, with 15+ hours per week during winter/spring and potential extension into summer.

You will research and onboard data sources, QA data for quality, and help build pipelines that structure location data for product use. This role emphasizes data wrangling, vendor management, and collaboration with product teams.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, statistics, data science, computer science, or related field.
• Hands-on experience working with data and datasets.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong SQL skills and ability to turn large messy data into clean formats.

Responsibilities

• Research, identify, and onboard data sources to support objectives.
• Profile, validate, QA data for quality, completeness, and consistency.
• Evaluate and onboard data vendors; track licenses and terms.
• Build, optimize, and maintain data pipelines for location data.
• Collaborate with product managers to define data needs for new features.

Lucky for you, we have an immediate opening for a Data Acquisition & Quality Specialist Intern to unlock the mysteries of data for cutting-edge products and systems. We need a tenacious data hunter who will stop at nothing to help Smarty find the hidden meaning and insight behind every location. This paid internship for students extends from January 2027 to the end of Summer Term (mid-August 2027). We are looking for a minimum of 15+ hours/week during Winter/Spring Terms, with the opportunity to work additional hours during the Summer term.

About the team

You'll join Data Foundations — the team that owns Smarty's data as an asset, from raw source to a trusted product. We're actively standing this function up across four disciplines, with real room to grow:

• Data Sourcing — vendor management, licensing, source discovery and qualification
• Data Quality — profiling, validation, measurement, monitoring
• Data Governance — cataloging, usage rights, standards, policy and enablement
• Data Engineering — QA pipelines, AI-powered automation, scalable processes

Who you are:

• Working towards a Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related analytical field
• Knowledge and hands on experience working with data
• Excellent organizational skills
• Experience with SQL, and a knack for turning large, messy datasets into clean, structured formats
• Problem solving attitude willing to take on new challenges

What you'll do:

• Research, identify, evaluate, and onboard data sources to meet organizational objectives
• Profile, validate, and QA data for quality, completeness, and consistency — then enrich and certify it for product, so what we ship is trusted, not just collected
• Evaluate, onboard, and maintain data vendors — vet new providers, track license terms and obligations, and keep our source relationships in good standing
• Build, optimize, and maintain data pipelines to process and structure location and enrichment data for internal use, and automate tasks through appropriate tools and scripting
• Collaborate with product managers to define data requirements for new features, and work with engineering teams to deliver data that meets functional requirements
• Participate in company cultural training initiatives, including Arbinger methodologies, and apply learned principles in your work and interactions with others
