The role offers growth in a relaxed environment and exposure to diverse projects across the southeastern US. The successful candidate will work under a Senior Dams/Geotechnical engineer, coordinate with senior staff, and lead inspections, analyses, and project management tasks for dam/levee safety initiatives.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field is required.
  • M.S. in Civil Engineering with geotechnical or structural focus preferred.
  • Professional Engineer license required with ability to obtain PE in TN and surrounding states.
  • Ideal candidate has 4+ years of dam/levee safety engineering experience including inspections, condition assessments, subsurface exploration, analyses, rehabilitation/removal design, and construction observation.
  • Experience with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performing/managing dam and/or levee safety inspections.
  • Coordinating and supervising fieldwork including subsurface explorations, instrumentation installations, surveys, and underwater inspections.
  • Oversight and management of resident engineering/construction monitoring for rehabilitation and removal projects.
  • Supervising data collection, organization, and interpretation for inspections and evaluations.
  • Performing analyses including seepage, slope stability, and gravity dam stability assessments.
  • Coordinating with water resource engineers on hydrologic/hydraulic analyses for spillway capacity and emergency planning.
  • Preparing inspection reports and permit applications; assisting in design and construction documents.
  • Occasional travel to project sites with reliable transportation.

Job description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is currently seeking Civil Engineers with a minimum of 5 years of engineering experience to join our growing Dam and Levee Safety Group in our Clarksville, Tennessee office. The position offers great potential for professional growth in a relaxed working environment and the opportunity to work on a wide variety of unique and challenging projects in the southeastern US. You will work directly under a Senior Dams/Geotechnical engineer in GZA’s Clarksville, TN office and also have the opportunity work with a variety of Senior Project Managers, Principals, and other Engineers from our other offices and practice areas around the country.

Successful candidates will be self-motivated, independent, and have a strong civil, geotechnical, or structural engineering background. Demonstrated project management skills and experience working on dams and/or levees are a plus.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performing/managing dam and/or levee safety inspections
  • Coordinating and supervising fieldwork activities including subsurface explorations and instrumentation installations, topographic survey work, and underwater inspections
  • Oversight and management of resident engineering/construction monitoring for dam and levee rehabilitation projects and dam removal projects
  • Supervising geotechnical data collection, organization, and interpretation in support of dam/levee inspections, engineering evaluations, and dam/levee rehabilitation projects and dam removal projects
  • Supervising, performing, and/or reviewing engineering analyses including seepage and slope stability analyses of embankment dams and levees, toe drain and filter designs, and gravity dam stability analyses
  • Coordinating with GZA’s water resource engineers performing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for spillway capacity evaluations, dam break analyses, and developing Emergency Action Plans
  • Performing/managing FERC Part 12 Dam Inspections, updating DSSMPs/DSSMRs, and STIDs
  • Participation in Potential Failure Mode Analysis sessions
  • Writing inspection/engineering reports and assisting in preparing permit applications
  • Designing dam rehabilitation projects including stability improvements, overtopping protection, seepage control, etc.
  • Preparing construction plans and technical specifications
  • Performing cost/quantity estimates and project scheduling
  • Performing construction administration Tasks including supervising resident engineers, reviewing submittals, and responding to RFI’s
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with team members, clients, and contractors
  • Providing leadership/mentoring to technical staff
  • Preparing technical proposals, developing scopes of work, and developing and managing budgets
  • Working with GZA Principals and interacting with clients and regulatory agencies
  • Executing project management duties including developing and managing a project schedule, managing and tracking budgets, preparing monthly invoices, scheduling staff, preparing subcontracts and managing subcontractors, and coordinating with clients
  • Occasional out-of-town travel will be required. Candidate must have consistent means of transportation to/from project sites
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field of practice is required
  • M.S. in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical or structural focus is preferred
  • Professional Engineer license is required with the ability to obtain PE in TN and surrounding states.
  • An ideal candidate will have at least 4 years of experience in dam/levee safety engineering, with direct involvement in dam/levee safety inspections, condition assessments, subsurface exploration programs, engineering analyses, dam rehabilitation/dam removal design, and construction observation
  • Experience or academic training with geotechnical computer software packages such as GeoStudio applications is preferred
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and organizational skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and manage junior staff
  • Strong Microsoft Offices is required; AutoCAD and GIS proficiency a plus
  • Experience with the municipal/state work, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and/or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is preferred
  • Occasional out-of-town travel will be required. The candidate must have a consistent means of transportation to/from project sites
