Successful candidates will work under supervision of technical specialists, project managers, and principals on civil and geotechnical dam projects. Applicants should have a solid civil/geotechnical background, strong communication, and willingness to travel.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • MS in Civil Engineering with geotechnical focus is preferred.
  • 4+ years of professional work experience involving dams or related structures preferred.
  • Experience or academic training with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio preferred.
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and organizational skills required.
  • AutoCAD and GIS proficiency are preferred.
  • Experience with municipal/state work, USACE, or FERC is preferred.
  • Occasional travel to project sites required and transportation available.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fieldwork including dam and levee safety inspections, planning, subsurface explorations, and instrumentation installations.
  • Review subsurface information to develop input parameters for geotechnical analyses.
  • Assist in lab testing to support geotechnical input parameter development.
  • Execute analyses such as seepage, slope stability, embankment and gravity dam analyses.
  • Perform finite element analyses and support excavation, ground improvement, and waterfront projects.
  • Write technical memos and reports summarizing analyses, results, and recommendations.
  • Assist with designing dam and levee rehabilitation projects and permit applications.
  • Assist with construction plans and technical specifications; contribute to contractor submittals.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Assist with proposals and internal project management.
  • Support cross-team collaboration across Geotechnical, Waterfront, and Contractor Services.

Job description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is currently seeking Civil/Dam Safety Engineers with 4 to 10 years of engineering experience to join our growing Dam and Levee Safety Group in our Norwood, Massachusetts office. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of technical specialists, project managers, and/or principals. A solid understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering principles and a passion to work on dams and levees are essential for this position.

Primary Responsibilities May Include:
  • Conducting fieldwork including dam and levee safety inspections, planning, and observing subsurface explorations and instrumentation installations, performing construction monitoring for dam and levee rehabilitation and dam removal projects.
  • Review of subsurface information to develop input parameters for geotechnical analyses.
  • Assistance in the assignment of laboratory testing to support development of input parameters for geotechnical analyses.
  • Executing engineering analyses such as seepage and slope stability analyses of embankment dams and levees, toe drain and filter designs, gravity dam stability analyses, etc.
  • Executing finite element analyses of dams, support of excavations, soil stabilization/ground improvement, tunneling, waterfront structures, etc.
  • Writing technical memos and reports summarizing analyses, results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Assisting with the design of dam and levee rehabilitation projects (including stability improvements, water control structures overtopping protection, seepage control, etc.); design of waterfront structures; and planning and design of dam removal / stream restoration projects.
  • Assisting with the development of permit applications for dam-related projects.
  • Assisting in the preparation of construction plans and technical specifications.
  • Assisting with constructability reviews and preparation of contractor work plan submittals for various underground construction activities.
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with contractors, clients, and team members.
  • Assisting with proposal development and internal project management.

Special Skills/Requirements:
  • BS degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • MS in Civil Engineering with geotechnical focus is preferred.
  • Experience or academic training with geotechnical computer software packages such as GeoStudio applications is preferred.
  • 4+ years of professional work experience involving dams or related structures is preferred.
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and organizational skills are required.
  • Strong Microsoft Offices is required; AutoCAD and GIS proficiency are preferred.
  • Experience with the municipal/state work, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and/or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is preferred.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel will be required. The candidate must have a consistent means of transportation to/from project sites.

The base salary for this position may range between $90,000.00 to $130,000.00. The actual base salary and total compensation will depend on many factors, including location, candidate experience, education, professional licensure, and other qualifications.

GZA’s Dam and Levee Safety Group is made up predominately by geotechnical engineers. Typical project teams include hydrologic and hydraulic engineers from our Water Resources Group and ecological professionals from our Natural Resource Group. GZA’s Norwood Dam and Levee Safety Group routinely executes project in the New England and Mid-Atlantic States and occasionally in other areas of the country. GZA’s Dam and Levee Safety Group routinely provides technical support to our Geotechnical, Waterfront, and Contractor Services Groups.
