Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) seeks an Assistant State Dam Safety Engineer III in Wake County. You will supervise the Dam Safety Review Program, review geotechnical and hydrologic reports, and support emergency planning.

You will work with regional teams, ensure regulatory compliance, and guide staff on inspections and records. Qualified candidates hold a PE license or must obtain one within nine months.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
• Four years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
• Must possess a valid Professional Engineer (PE) license or obtain within nine months of start date.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert technical and engineering assistance to central staff, regional staff, other state agencies, developers, engineers, and dam owners in implementing dam safety policies and rules.
• Train regional staff on inspection procedures, records, and emergency responses.
• Assist in maintaining records of dam conditions and coordinating with the Division of Emergency Management during emergencies.
