Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Engineer III to lead stormwater design and compliance activities within the Hydraulics Unit. You will develop and review hydrologic and hydraulic studies for roadway drainage, bridges, and SCMs, and help ensure NFIP/NPDES permit adherence.

You will also manage project delivery, provide technical training, and coordinate with internal teams and consultants, while supporting emergency response and resilience efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and four years of related experience.
  • Experience with hydrologic/hydraulic modeling and design.
  • Ability to supervise staff and coordinate with stakeholders.
  • Professional Engineer licensure may be required.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, NCHRP, TRB resources.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review hydrologic/hydraulic studies for drainage, bridges, SCMs.
  • Conduct advanced modeling and risk assessments for project delivery.
  • Identify stormwater retrofit opportunities and oversee SCM implementation.
  • Manage stormwater compliance programs and tool updates.
  • Support emergency storm response, design, and permitting activities.
  • Provide technical training and guidance to staff and consultants.
