Job summary

Everett Public Schools in Everett, Massachusetts, seeks daily substitute teachers to execute lesson plans, maintain a respectful and fair classroom culture, and monitor student behavior in person. Substitutes work on a varying schedule and are not guaranteed daily assignments.

Starting date is immediate. Position is part-time with a daily rate of $150, located district-wide in Everett. Candidates should have at least a high school diploma; a bachelor’s degree and DESE licensure are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Google Classroom and Canvas Platform.
  • Ability to deliver lessons as outlined by the lead teacher.
  • Experience monitoring students in a classroom setting.
  • Experience teaching or working with school-age children.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective classroom management and safety.
  • Ability to address diverse learning styles, including multilingual students and students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Keep classroom discipline to foster a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Ensure health, welfare and safety of all students under supervision.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, and materials.
  • Report to the school principal upon arrival and departure when in person.
  • Check in to access daily lesson plans whether remote or in person.
  • Review lesson plans and materials left by the absent teacher.
  • Report injuries or discipline issues promptly to the principal.
  • Implement lesson plans while maintaining academic time and engagement.
  • Organize students for effective instruction.
  • Dismiss students before leaving the building when in person.
  • Ensure students leave the online classroom when required.
  • Comply with school policies and procedures; model non-discrimination.
  • Support an environment that respects diversity and promotes inclusion.

Job Description

Job Goal: Substitute Teachers will need to execute lesson plans left by the absent teacher, create and maintain a respectful and fair classroom culture that fosters safe and productive learning in person. Substitute Teachers will monitor, observe, and report student behavior according to school policies and procedures.


Terms of Employment:


Our need for Substitutes will vary from day-to-day and week-to-week and, as such, we cannot guarantee work each day. Employment in this regard, is therefore not applicable under the provisions of chapter 71, Section 41 of the Massachusetts General Laws pertaining to tenure of teachers.



  • September - June (Available assignments are based on a scheduled school year)

  • Location: District Wide

  • $150 per day worked

  • Union Status: Non-Union


Responsibilities and Tasks:



  • Maintain and respect confidentiality of student and school personnel information;

  • Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policies;

  • Ensure the adequate supervision to assure health, welfare, and safety of all students;

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;

  • Report to Principal of the school upon arrival and departure at school if in person;

  • Check in Frontline under substitute notes for link to lessons for the day if remote and/or in person;

  • Review lesson plans, materials, and/or instructions left by absent teacher;

  • Report student injuries, accidents, illnesses, or discipline problems to the school principal immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible;

  • Implement lesson plans, while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a manner in which motivates students to learn and participate;

  • Organize students for effective instruction;

  • Dismiss all students from the classroom before leaving the building if in person;

  • Ensure that all students leave the zoom/google site before leaving the online classroom

  • Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies;

  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities;

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s) in accordance with school policies and practices.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Experience in Google Classroom and Canvas Platform

  • Experience in delivering lessons as outlined by the teacher

  • Experience monitoring students

  • Experience teaching or working with school-age children

  • Teaching capabilities in all subject areas preferred

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, orally and in writing

  • The ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies and ensure student safety

  • The ability to address the various learning styles of students, including multilingual and students with disabilities

  • The ability to implement strategies, activities and techniques for promoting quality student performance in both academic and social behavior based on student's prior knowledge and experience

  • The ability to effectively contribute to and manage an individual program plan for students with special needs;

  • The ability to create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students

  • The ability to demonstrate fair and ethical judgments

  • The ability to display problem solving, cooperative negotiating skills and conflict resolution strategies

  • The ability to use classroom instructional time appropriately and wisely

  • The ability to create a strong sense of belonging and an environment that is culturally inclusive of all students


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age;

  • Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school or General Education Certificate (GED) required


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s degree

  • At least 1 year of experience

  • DESE Licensure

  • Multilingual
