Job summary

Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering a 2027 Summer Internship Program in Des Moines, IA. This internship provides hands-on experience in cybersecurity, risk management, and governance tools within our Technology Division.

You will work on real-world projects, learn from experts, and develop practical skills while contributing to the organization. As a current student in Computer Engineering, CS, or Cybersecurity, you will gain exposure to security operations, scripting, and threat

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity or related program.
• Knowledge of scripting languages: Python, PowerShell, Bash.
• Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing environments and analyze risks.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with business areas.

Responsibilities

• Support Cyber Security projects in the Technology Division.
• Test, scan, monitor, and run tools against infrastructure.
• Configure tools (data loss prevention, email security, malware etc.).
• Develop code to refine or augment existing tools and load results to a database.
• Process optimization and support for Cyber threat intelligence.
• Assist Cyber Kill Chain and Threat Response enhancements.

Job Description

What’s Cyber Security in our Technology Division? At Wellmark we take a holistic approach to Cybersecurity. Identify and create risk management strategy and governance tools, structure and process. Protect through Identify and Access Management, training & awareness, data security, information protection processes & procedures. Detect anomalies and events through continuous monitoring and detection processes. Respond with communications, analysis, mitigation and continuous improvement. Recover with planning, communication and improvement.

What projects might I support? Although subject to change, examples of projects you will be contributing to include:

• Work in the Security Operations Center
• Test, scan, monitor, andrun different tools against current infrastructure
• Configure tools (data loss protection, email security, malware related, etc)
• Develop code – refine or augment existing tools, load results to a database or engine
• Process optimization
• Aid our Cyberthreat Intelligence group in analysis of DarkWeb activities
• Support Cyber Kill Chain and Threat Response enhancements

This internship will start in May of 2027, working a hybrid schedule from our headquarters in Des Moines.

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor's degree inComputer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity or relatedprogram
• Knowledge of scripting languages
