Objective & Relationships

Objective: Under the direct supervision of the Water Supervisor, the Customer Service Technician performs technical and customer service duties, including testing, installation, and repair of water meters, reading meters for billing, and assisting customers with water service concerns.

Relationships: Reports to: Water Supervisor. Works with Department, Division, and Office heads, city employees, other agencies, and the public. No supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties
  • Conduct meter replacements and transponder replacements as required.
  • Complete meter readings for billing purposes.
  • Respond to requests for final meter reads and service issues.
  • Assist in meter testing programs.
  • Address residential water meter inquiries and operational issues or refer them to supervisors.
  • Operate hand-held devices for programming or replacing radio read devices.
  • Update customer records and report completed work and issues to the Crew Leader.
  • Report vehicle or equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform daily maintenance of City equipment.
  • Provide effective customer service and promote community relations.
  • Assist in snow plow operations as needed.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries or refer to supervisors.
  • Collaborate with Water Operators on work assignments.
  • Follow safety regulations, report unsafe conditions, accidents, and perform other duties as assigned, including during emergencies.
Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in heavy equipment operation, construction, or a related trade.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Valid driver’s license at hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or trade school coursework in a related field.

A combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of water meters, city geography, repair techniques, snow and ice control, and possess skills in equipment operation, customer service, organization, communication, collaboration, and technical proficiency. Abilities include strenuous labor, mathematical calculations, record keeping, independent work, licensing, decision-making, scheduling, technology use, safety compliance, and more. Behaviors include professionalism, ethics, inclusivity, fairness, reliability, teamwork, and positive public interaction.

Additional Information

Work involves outdoor conditions, exposure to weather, mechanical hazards, chemicals, noise, and physical activities such as walking, standing, lifting, and climbing. Vision, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive abilities are required. Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm, with emergency response availability 24/7.
