Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach is seeking a full-time custodian to maintain cleanliness and safety across its campuses. The role covers custodial tasks, facilities upkeep, and support for daily operations within a regional educational setting.

The position requires physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work a 4:00 PM–12:30 AM or 2:30 PM–11 PM schedule with rotating weekends.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift objects not more than 50 lbs.
  • Experience in a janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping program/environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide custodial/housekeeping services for college facilities to include trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, window cleaning, and board cleaning.
  • Provide room set-up/take-down assistance and as assigned.
  • Perform other cleaning tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain and demonstrate good attendance habits.

Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC . TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Provides a full range of custodial/ housekeeping services for college facilities to include, but not limited to, trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, window cleaning, black/white-board cleaning, etc. Provides room set-up/take-down assistance and as assigned. Performs other cleaning tasks as assigned. Maintain and demonstrate good attendance habits.
This position has been designated an essential position. The employees filling these positions may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/ campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of janitorial, custodial, and housekeeping services, and sanitizing techniques.
  • Knowledge of custodial operations and industry standards.
  • Ability to climb ladders without assistance.
  • Ability to lift objects not more than 50 lbs.
  • Experience in a janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping program/environment.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience within a multi-building housekeeping operation, preferred.
