Ball State University is seeking a Custodian Relief and Project for on-campus facilities in Muncie, IN. The role operates Saturday to Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday off, with pay range $18.68–$19.30 per hour and comprehensive benefits.

  • Dust, vacuum, and polish furniture and surfaces; change lighting as required.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables; maintain cleanliness of exterior areas.
  • Lock and unlock doors and assist with room setup and minor repairs as needed.

About this opportunity: Saturday-Wednesday 7:30-4:00 PM, off Thursday and Friday. This position is to fill in for the south neighborhood buildings and any open area at Park Hall. A valid driving license is required for this position. Ball State University Housing has an opportunity for a Custodian Relief and Project. What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Clean, renovate, and renew resilient, wood, and hard floor surface finishes, i.e., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish and spray buff, strip, seal, wax, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of floor machines, wet/dry vacuum, scrubbers, mops, buckets, measuring cups, putty knife, cloth or sponge, eye protection, filter mask, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.

Maintain carpet floor coverings, i.e., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Clean and service all areas in restrooms to include, but not limited to, lavatory, toilet, urinal, showers, bathtub areas, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of floor machine, wet/dry vacuum, portable vacuum, hand duster, bucket and wringer, mops, brushes, ladder, sponge, eye protection, gloves, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions, information.
  4. 4. Dust, vacuum, clean and/or polish furniture and surfaces; clean facilities, fixtures, hardware and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures as required. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, stand, climb, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of dust mop, portable vacuum, hand duster, counter brush, ladder, scaffolds, screwdriver, spray bottle, bucket, sponge, cloth, eye protection, filter mask, light bulbs and tubes, various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside working conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend and follow written instructions and information.
  5. 5. Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials and debris into designated receptacles. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, etc. Task requires the use of trash carts, bags and cans, dollies, gloves, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend and follow written instructions and information.
  6. 6. Sweep debris, and/or sweep or shovel snow from outside entrances, landings, steps, walks, etc.; clean exterior surfaces of windows, doors, and other building fixtures. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, grasp, and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of brooms, snow shovel, plastic bags, squeegee, pole, rags, towels, etc. Task exposes employees to inside and outside working conditions. Clean appliances, i.e., stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, ice machines, washers, dryers, etc. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, balance, climb, stand, walk, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Set rooms according to custodial work sheet and customer specifications; arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment from room to room as required; report items requiring repair to supervisor and/or group leaders; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures, if position requires it. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, stand, walk, lift, push, pull, finger, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly.   15. 15. Mobilize fully loaded trash dumpster; push/pull dumpster to loading dock, push/pull dumpster to compactor, secure dumpster to compactor, mobilize empty dumpster, if position requires it. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, stand, walk, and exert up to 68 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to read written materials, judge distances, shape, shadows, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend and follow written instructions and information. Task exposes employees to inside/outside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, vibrations, heat, oils, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. 1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  2. 2. No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals or environmental factors in custodial service.
  3. 3. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding of various heights to perform duties.
  4. 4. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures and communications, and perform basic mathematical functions.
  5. 5. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy, if required by assignment.
  6. 6. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
  7. 7. Must successfully pass manlift certification, if position requires it, within a reasonable period of time after hire.
  8. 8. Must have at least one year work experience (full time or part time).
  9. 9. You must be 18 years or older.
