Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Custodian II serves as a lead custodian and floor care specialist with responsibility for supporting operations in the absence of a manager or supervisor. While this is a non-supervisory role, Custodian III is expected to demonstrate a higher level of knowledge and provide on-site guidance and training to other custodial staff. This role involves extensive physical labor, adherence to safety standards, and regular use of specialized custodial and floor care equipment.

This role works collaboratively across LSC campuses on special projects, recommend process improvement, and implement best practices in standard operating procedures (SOPs) across functional units.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Advises and informs staff on proper custodial procedures and best practices. Trains new and existing custodial staff on proper cleaning techniques, safety practices, and equipment usage
  2. Provides direct services to internal customers when immediate decisions are required
  3. Cleans assigned areas to the standards set by the college and supervisor, including but not limited to: dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, window washing, restroom cleaning, and trash removal
  4. Operates floor care machinery to strip, wax, buff, and maintain hard floor surfaces; Cleans carpeted areas using extraction and spot-cleaning methods
  5. Accurately mixes and labels cleaning solutions and chemicals
  6. Sets up and breaks down tables, chairs, and rooms for events as needed
  7. Maintains strict adherence to safety protocols, including chemical use, equipment handling, and injury prevention techniques
  8. Maintains appropriate supply levels and ensures equipment is operational. Performs basic maintenance on custodial equipment
  9. Conducts spot inspections to ensure compliance with custodial standards
  10. Maintains records and prepares routine reports as required
  11. Completes required annual safety, PPE, and hazardous chemical training
  12. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Proficiency in using custodial and specialized floor care equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and cleanliness standards
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Ability to lift up-to fifty (50) pounds and perform physically demanding tasks
  • Ability to train and mentor custodial staff
  • Sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Manual dexterity to operate custodial equipment and tools
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and perform physical tasks frequently
  • Ability to convey detailed verbal instructions clearly and accurately
  • Reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, and extending arms regularly
  • Visual and auditory ability to assess safety hazards and maintenance needs
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS
  • Utilizes brooms, mops, vacuums, floor care equipment, computers, and related custodial tools
  • Interacts with internal and external stakeholders to fulfill job responsibilities
  • Performs duties both indoors and outdoors, often exposed to dust, dirt, and cleaning agents
  • May regularly travel to different LSC locations
  • May be fully reassigned to other LSC locations if necessary
  • May need to work weekends and untraditional hours if necessary
  • This position is classified as an essential employee, which means the individual may be required to report to work during college closures or emergencies to support recovery and reopening efforts.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Experience in a supervisory or team lead role
  • Advanced Certified Cleaning Technician (ACCT) or Expert Certified Cleaning Technician (ECCT) certification
  • Certified Building Service Manager credential
Salary

Hiring salary range is $38,761 - $44,575

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
