Job summary

The University of Arizona is seeking a Custodian I to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across university buildings and grounds. This role performs routine custodial tasks and basic preventative maintenance under supervision, supporting daily operations for students, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities include cleaning and sanitizing spaces, waste management, equipment operation, and assisting with special projects and events.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Exceptional customer service experience is preferred.
  • Two years or more of institutional custodial experience is preferred.
  • Experience operating carpet cleaning and floor finishing machines is a plus.

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and public areas following established schedules and procedures.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables; restock restroom and facility supplies such as soap, paper products, and sanitizers.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment including vacuums, floor polishers, and steam cleaners while using cleaning chemicals safely and properly.
  • Assist with deep cleaning projects (e.g., carpet shampooing, floor waxing, window washing), laundry tasks, and provide courteous assistance to building occupants and visitors.
  • Involve a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the cleanliness and organization of event spaces.

Job description

The Custodian I position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in university buildings and grounds. This role performs routine custodial and basic preventative maintenance tasks and special events support under supervision, following established procedures and schedules. The position supports the daily operations of the university by ensuring facilities are clean, orderly, and welcoming to students, staff, and visitors.

Duties & Responsibilities
General Cleaning and Sanitation
  • Clean and sanitize assigned classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and public areas following established schedules and procedures.
Waste Management and Restocking Supplies
  • Collect and properly dispose of trash and recyclables; restock restroom and facility supplies such as soap, paper products, and sanitizers.
Equipment Operation and Care
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment including vacuums, floor polishers, and steam cleaners while using cleaning chemicals safely and properly.
Special Projects and Support Services

Special Event Support
  • Involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the cleanliness and organization of event spaces.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, products, techniques, standards and safety procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and ensure all areas of the facility are kept clean and in sanitary conditions.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
Physical Requirement
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
