Position Title: Custodian
Salary Range: Regionally Competitive
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Immediate Supervisor: Principal, Director of Buildings and Grounds and Director of Custodians
Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the principal and Director of Custodians, the Custodian performs general cleaning and maintenance duties in school buildings and on school grounds. This role ensures equipment is kept in functional condition and provides custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors, and others as needed. The Custodian also performs related duties and general maintenance work as required.
Responsibilities
- Check and secure the building at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the building.
- Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas of the building according to district standards.
- Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors.
- Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
- Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
- Remove graffiti and clean glass areas.
Replace light bulbs as needed.
Set up and break down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting and functional rooms. * Clear snow from entrances and walks, spreading sand and ice-melting chemicals. * Perform groundskeeping duties, including clearing debris and maintaining grounds. * Receive deliveries, assist in unloading trucks, and store supplies. * Deliver supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas of the building. * Empty wastebaskets, pick up and remove trash, and assist in recycling programs.
Additional Duties
- Perform general cleaning and repair work, particularly during school vacations.
- Assist parents and other visitors with special events and programs.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Equipment: Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and hand tools.
Safety Requirements
- Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment.
- Wear appropriate safety gear, including masks.
- Comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
Travel Requirements: Occasional travel between schools or between schools and the central office may be required.
Qualifications
- Required Experience or Training: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent with at least two years of experience in building maintenance. The candidate should possess basic computer skills, be able to lift up to 60 pounds, and hold a valid operator's license.
- Desired Experience or Training: Includes any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills and knowledge for successful performance in the role. This may involve formal education, on-the-job training, or prior experience in a similar position, ensuring the candidate has the abilities needed to meet the job's responsibilities effectively.
Working Conditions
- Mental Demands: Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, prioritize tasks, and respond to facility-related issues in a timely and effective manner. Requires the ability to maintain awareness of safety protocols, use sound judgment when operating equipment or handling cleaning agents, and adapt to changing schedules or emergencies. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential.
- Physical Demands: Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, and in various indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to lift 60 pounds without assistance and safely handle tools and equipment for extended periods.
- Environmental Conditions: Work is primarily performed indoors with routine exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and bodily fluids. Custodians may occasionally work outdoors in varying weather conditions to maintain building entrances, walkways, and grounds. The position involves standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating cleaning equipment for extended periods. Must be available for assigned shifts, including evenings or weekends, and respond to emergencies as needed. Must be able to handle stress.
