Job summary

Gateway Technical College in Elkhorn, WI, is hiring a full-time Custodian to keep the Elkhorn Campus clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. The role covers daily cleaning, snow removal, event setup, and basic maintenance. Shift: Monday–Thursday 2:00 PM–10:30 PM; Friday 9:30 AM–6:00 PM.

Reports to Campus Facilities Manager. Qualifications include a valid driver’s license, basic computer skills, and cleaning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain campus spaces using appropriate germicides, cleaning products, and procedures.
  • Dust, scrub, and clean surfaces, furniture, floors, and shared spaces.
  • Operate industrial cleaning equipment, including carpet extractors, high-speed buffers, and scrubbers.
  • Inspect campus areas and remove trash and debris from buildings and grounds.
  • Maintain custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies.
  • Respond to service requests through a web-based work order system.
  • Perform preventative and regular maintenance around campus facilities.
  • Support minor repairs, painting, and basic troubleshooting of plumbing or electrical issues.
  • Assist with loading and unloading trucks, supplies, furniture, and equipment.
  • Help maintain the condition, function, and appearance of campus buildings.
  • Coordinate the setup and takedown of furniture and equipment for campus and community events.
  • Prepare rooms and shared spaces based on event and operational needs.
  • Respond professionally to campus service needs and work requests.
  • Provide customer-focused support to students, employees, visitors, and community members.
  • Lock and secure campus buildings.
  • Follow Gateway safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Perform snow removal using plows, snow blowers, shovels, and salt-spreading equipment.
  • Operate district-owned vehicles and snow-removal equipment as needed.
  • Support safe campus operations during changing weather and seasonal conditions.

The Role in Brief

As a Custodian, you will help keep the Elkhorn Campus clean, safe, and welcoming for students, employees, visitors, and community members. You will follow daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules while also supporting campus events, facility needs, snow removal, and general building operations.

You will report to the Campus Facilities Manager.

What You Will Actually Do

What You Need to Succeed
Required
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Cleaning experience.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Follow instructions, schedules, safety procedures, and chemical or solvent labels.
  • Use email, basic computer systems, and a web-based ticketing or work-order system.
  • Complete forklift training and certification as required.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet cleaning and facility schedules.
  • Operate carpet extractors, high-speed buffers, scrubbers, floor jacks, forklifts, snow-removal equipment, and district-owned vehicles.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and strong customer care.
  • Promote teamwork, efficiency, and a positive campus environment.
Conditions of Employment

Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Background Check: Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background check.

Schedule: Flexibility is needed to accommodate business and campus needs.

Travel: Ability to travel within the district with little or no notice.

Uniform: A required work uniform is supplied by the department.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

This is an active, hands-on position. The work requires extended standing and walking, frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing stairs, and verbal communication. The role also includes lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, driving, working outdoors, and using custodial and snow-removal equipment.
