Job summary

Grand Rapids Community College is seeking a dedicated custodian for night shift support across campus buildings. You will maintain cleanliness, manage the open/close procedures, and assist with snow removal while staying cognizant of fire alarms and security systems.

The role requires operating a variety of cleaning equipment, performing minor maintenance, and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for faculty, staff, and students. Training is available; a high school diploma or GED is required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Clean floors, restrooms, classrooms, offices, and stairwells.
  • Order cleaning supplies and manage inventory.
  • Perform snow removal and respond to weather-related needs.
  • Open facilities at start of shift and secure them at close.
  • Identify chemicals and cleaning fluids for appropriate tasks.
  • Operate pallet jack and scissor lift; drive a vehicle as needed.

Job description

The custodian’s position is primarily to provide support at various college buildings as directed by the facilities operations building manager. The position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of facilities; the surrounding external adjacent area; performing minor maintenance; and snow removal from walkways. A major aspect besides cleaning of the facility is to ensure it is open and then secured at the end of day. Additionally, the individual must be cognizant of the fire alarm and security systems.

Compensation: $19.13 per hour (includes a $0.55 premium for 3rd shift)

Essential Functions
  • Cleaning of hardwood surfaces
  • Cleaning of carpeting and upholstery
  • Cleaning of terrazzo and tile/linoleum floors
  • Cleaning of restrooms, stairwells, classrooms, offices, etc.
  • Ordering of supplies/cleaning products
  • Replacement of fluorescent tubes and light bulbs
  • Snow removal
  • Opening and securing of facilities
  • Unclogging of toilets/sinks
  • Identification of chemicals and cleaning fluids for appropriate tasks
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on building requirements
  • Use of pallet jack
  • Use of scissors lift
  • Driving a vehicle
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education Credentials
  • A minimum of a high school degree or GED diploma required
Work Experience
  • Training on the job available with limited to no commercial cleaning experience
  • Commercial cleaning experience in an educational environment preferred
Skills
  • Must be able to use a variety of carpet extractors (walk behind/push-pull), Taski dry foam swing scrubbers, operate all floor hand rotary and vibrating scrubbers, operate wet vacuums, use 4’; 6’; 8’; and 10’ ladders, use carpet bonnet machines, use and have knowledge of all cleaning chemicals and dispensing systems, gas and electric power sprayers, all general use custodial equipment such as mops, buckets, brooms, dusters, etc., operate snow blowers, use salt spreaders, use man lifts and pallet jacks, do light electrical and plumbing work using pliers, use screwdrivers, plungers, etc., and be able to drive a vehicle
  • Maintain good attendance and be punctual when arriving to and leaving work
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing via email. Have the ability to provide customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public

  • Be able to adjust to a flexible and changing schedule
