Job description

Position Summary

South Seattle College is seeking a Part‐time Custodian 2 in the Facilities Department. The role is classified, union represented, and part of the South Seattle College district. The incumbent will perform general cleaning and custodial duties, maintaining the cleanliness of assigned areas under the supervision of the Facilities Manager.

Salary & Hours

Salary Range: $$21.61-$26.07/hr (DOE). Work hours are Monday through Friday, variable shift, with an expected 16 hours per week.

Union & Employment Conditions

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE and is subject to union shop provisions.

Essential Functions
  • Perform routine janitorial and custodial functions at an assigned work area, following lead custodial or manager timelines.
  • Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeteria, gymnasium, library, offices, and related facilities.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and polish concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors, floor panels and hand railings.
  • Learn and use new technologies and products as directed.
  • Wash windows, walls, and clean whiteboards, chalkboards and trays.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment in classrooms and offices in preparation for campus functions, classes, and special activities.
  • Clean and maintain rugs and carpets; replace light bulbs and lighting tubes.
  • Lock and unlock doors, gates, buildings, and windows.
  • Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority and report maintenance repair needs to the appropriate authority.
  • Pick up paper and debris; sweep, clean stairs, walkways, and entrances.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines; clean tables, chairs and floors as needed.
  • Respond to callbacks and overtime duties as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 6 months to 1 year of any combination of training and experience that indicates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Moderate physical effort, including frequent standing, walking, lifting or moving heavy goods up to 50 pounds; activity may require full body exertion and exposure to weather extremes.
  • Knowledge of current efficient cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment; safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial and custodial work.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; read and write at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
  • Safely, efficiently, and effectively use cleaning materials and equipment as assigned.
  • Quickly learn and successfully use new technologies and products as directed.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties safely and effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships and demonstrate sensitivity to the academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
  • Typically works in an office environment, using a computer, telephone and other office equipment.
  • Encounters frequent interruptions throughout the workday.
  • Regularly required to provide 1:1 support, present to small groups, and work at a computer, exercising repetitive hand motion with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, stooping and traversing stairs.
