Job summary

Dartmouth College is seeking a Custodian to perform a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks on first shift. Under supervision, you will handle floors, restrooms, windows, and event set-ups across campus facilities, while following safety guidelines and recycling procedures.

The role requires 1–2 years custodial experience, ability to lift, use ladders, operate cleaning equipment, and work overtime when needed.

Qualifications

• Sweep leaves, shovel snow, spread sand, and assist with pest control as needed.
• Track cleaning materials and equipment; notify leadership for needs or repairs.
• Assist or act in squad leader’s absence; perform additional duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Purpose

Under supervision from the Custodial Squad Leader or Custodial Supervisor, performs a wide variety of tasks, including cleaning and unskilled building maintenance, event set‑ups, animal and insect control, and medium to heavy lifting inside and outside a variety of the College’s facilities. Implements recycling procedures. This posting is for a first shift position.

Shift Schedule

First shift schedules include 4 am–12:30 pm, 5 am–1:30 pm, 6 am–2:30 pm, 7 am–3:30 pm, 8 am–4:30 pm, with two consecutive days off.

Responsibilities

• Unlock and lock assigned spaces; clean, mop, strip, wax, and buff hard surface floors (stairs, public restrooms, kitchens, laboratories, dining rooms, hallways).
• Vacuum and shampoo carpeted offices, hallways, and common areas.
• Wash windows (inside and outside) in entrance halls; dust office furniture and window sills.
• Clean public restrooms and showers, scrub, disinfect, deodorize toilet bowls and sinks, wipe counters and vanities, polish mirrors, and replace and stock restroom supplies.
• Empty office and common‑area trash cans; implement FO&M recycling procedures; pick up and bag all trash inside building and loose trash around building perimeters to designated areas.
• Change light bulbs and clean light‑fixture lenses (using ladders when necessary) on an as‑needed basis.
• Perform major set‑up and breakdown for College events (set up tables, chairs, lecterns, podiums, dividers, platforms, coat racks, covers).
• Sweep dirt and leaves, shovel snow from walkways, spread sand at walkways; set traps to catch rodents and release them outside; spray inside and outside buildings with chemicals to control insects.
• Track cleaning materials and equipment; notify the Squad Leader when more materials are needed or equipment repairs/replacements are required; occasionally assist or act in the squad leader’s absence.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• 1–2 years of experience in custodial or related maintenance work.
• Minimum six months to one year of experience in cleaning or custodial duties.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying light to medium weight objects.
• Must be able to work from ladders and step‑ladders to clean and maintain light fixtures.
• Ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, powered scrubber, buffer, carpet shampooer) and other hand‑operated tools.
• Understanding of safe use of various chemical substances used for cleaning and insect control.
• Familiarity or ability to learn different table/chair arrangements for event set‑ups.
• Willingness to work mandatory overtime when required.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Must successfully complete required training: Hazard Communication and Blood Borne Pathogens.
