Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Cryo-EM Specialist to support state-of-the-art electron microscopy facilities and instrumentation. You will oversee, operate and maintain cryoEM microscopes and assist researchers in single particle and tomography studies, contributing to data collection, processing and publications.

The role requires a BS with two years of related work or a MS/PhD, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a team-driven

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in structural biology, biophysics, physics, biochemistry, chemistry or bioengineering, or related scientific field
• Master’s degree in related field or PhD preferred
• Two years of relevant work experience for bachelor’s degree holders

Responsibilities

• Conduct cryoEM specimen preparation.
• Operate electron microscopes for the study of cryo-specimens.
• Screen cryo-EM specimens for suitability in structural research.
• Perform preliminary image data quality evaluation, load samples and tune microscopes.
• Collect image data for users.
• Assess data collection quality and provide evaluation.
• Interface with the SLAC computing team to support data collection, storage and processing.
• Perform image processing.
• Assist researchers on cryoEM projects and oversee experiments.
• Orient and train new staff, external and internal users, postdocs and students.
• Develop and support data collection enhancements.
• Develop instruction material and contribute to reports and publications.
• Maintain the microscopes and related equipment; log performance and usage.
• Perform complex lab tasks in defined projects.
• Interpret and analyze results and contribute to new protocols.
• Make recommendations on plan design and research direction.
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams across divisions.
• Stay current with new procedures through literature review.
