Crossing Guard

Wage: $21.00 Hourly

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs routine traffic control duties at crosswalks and follows established traffic control procedures to assure the safety of students and pedestrians crossing roadways

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under close supervision of the Police Chief

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Turns on flashing caution lights along main road to warn motorists of students crossing the road; sets up orange cones in the road by the cross walk; slows down, stops and directs traffic according to established traffic control procedures; directs traffic to stop while students cross the street; insures students are safely across the road; directs traffic to continue.
  • Performs the duty of crossing guard during the morning, lunch hour and after school everyday while school is in session; instructs students on proper safety procedures and precautions.
  • Insures proper maintenance of equipment; replaces old or worn equipment as necessary.
  • Informs police department of any problems; requests needed supplies; insures payroll time sheets are submitted promptly and accurately.
  • Communicates with officers, dispatch and the police station by hand-held radio as needed to report incidents requiring police action.
  • Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
  1. Education and Experience:

A. Sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above duties; above and related duties; and

B. Sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with above duties;

  1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of local traffic laws; basic traffic safety; basic first aid; basic interpersonal communication skills; the operation of traffic signalization equipment and semaphores

    Functions of the position are periodically performed in an uncontrolled, hazardous environment, subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel required in normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning will be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminate thinking, creative problem solving. Continuous use of motor skills.

As per Washington City policy and/or procedures, a background check, and drug screening evaluation will be required for potential new hire candidates prior to an offer of employment. I understand that if I am under the age of 18, I must have my parent or my legal guardian grant their permission for the background check and drug screening test to be performed.
