Minimum Requirements

• Ability to make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
• Ability to work with school‑aged children.
• Complete pre‑service training program satisfactorily.
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function.
• Ability to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Role Responsibilities

• Supervise the safe crossing of school children at designated crossing areas.
• Direct school children to cross the street without unreasonable delay when crossing is safe.
• Control vehicular traffic as necessary to assure a safe crossing of school children.
• Inform motorists with appropriate hand signals that school children are about to use the crossing and have the right‑of‑way.
• Report motorists who fail to comply with provisions of the law governing the movement of vehicular traffic.
• Maintain and uphold the highest standard of personal conduct and appearance while carrying out responsibilities.
• Keep the uniform neat, clean, and well‑maintained.
• Be on post each day that school is in session.
• Maintain a polite and courteous attitude at all times.
• Demonstrate courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools.
• Perform other crossing guard related duties as may be assigned.

Environmental Factors and Physical/Mental Requirements

Required periods of standing. Must use sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with others as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to move, raise, lower, and carry objects up to 20 lbs on a regular basis and over 20 lbs on an irregular basis. Must be able to bend, crouch, stoop, reach, and climb stairs. Will be subjected to loud noises, dust, fumes, hot and cold outdoor temperatures and related weather conditions.
