Description
The Mundelein Police Department is looking for a reliable individual to serve as a School Crossing Guard. Morning and afternoon hours are required. All equipment and training are provided.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Research and Development Supervisor and shift supervisory personnel, provide safe street crossing to school children, while wearing a safety vest and utilizing hand signs and other equipment as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Direct and control children at designated crossings, crossing in groups, and utilizing traffic signals and gaps in traffic where no signals exists.
- Prevent children from committing unsafe and unlawful acts ensuring a pattern of safe behavior of children when crossing streets.
- Inform motorists, through prescribed signals, that children are using the crosswalk and have the right to proceed.
- Observe and report incidents and conditions detrimental to the safety of pedestrians or motorists to the on duty watch commander. This includes but is not limited to, violations of traffic laws and disciplinary problems involving children who regularly use the particular crossing.
- Minor student problems should be adjudicated through the appropriate school officials.
Requirements
- This position requires the minimum age of 18.
- May be required to attend and complete safety courses and others as mandated by the Chief of Police.
- This position calls for prolonged standing, repetitive use of hand signals to motorists and school children, and the ability to withstand a variety of year-round fluctuating weather conditions.
- Decipher of color, sound, and the ability to work in varying light conditions with little or no supervision is also required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
- Should possess a knowledge of traffic safety rules dealing with children and the public, and be prompt and reliable.
- Must be able to relate to and supervise children.
- Must be able to deal tactfully and courteously with school district officials and the public.
- Must have the ability to train and instruct new crossing guards for relief purposes when required.
SALARY AND SCHEDULE
- Hourly rate of $23.00 per hour.
- Estimated schedule is 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon Monday through Friday during the school year (approximately 8:00-9:00 AM and 3:15-4:15 PM).
