Job summary

Job description

The City of Kettering Engineering Department is seeking to fill Regular Part-time Crossing Guard positions to work 10-12 hours per week during the school year. Job responsibilities include the safety and the efficient crossing of the street by school children within and in the immediate vicinity of school crosswalks daily supervision of school safety patrol and elementary school children in their travel to and from school at designated intersections along city roadways. This position also participates in periodic functions or events in relation to student school safety patrols or public outreach and will be a visible representative of the City of Kettering.

Compensation: Pay range is $15.72 to $21.60 per hour. Benefits include paid sick leave vacation leave and holiday pay.

Assist in designing and carrying out studies to identify various traffic situations with the City;

Identification of traffic violators;

Report damaged traffic control devices, sidewalks, parking lots and other structures to the Engineering department;

Assist in the development of safety lessons and serve as an instructor for in-class safety presentations in the areas of pedestrian and bicycle safety, seat belt programs, Kettering Safety Village and general traffic safety;

Cooperate with principals, teachers and PTA/PTO representatives who initiate safety programs and activities;

Train and supervise the school safety patrol, and in conjunction with school officials, the actions of school safety patrols within the City;

Correct and/or make recommendations to school officials regarding the functioning of the school safety patrol, which will enable student pedestrians and bicyclist to arrive and depart from school safely;

Continuously evaluate the performance of school safety patrols and inform school officials of the results of these evaluations;

Participate in periodic functions or events in relation to safety patrols or public outreach and be a visible representative of the City of Kettering.

Knowledge of Transportation Engineering and Police divisions' activities as they relate to motor vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle laws and related practices. Ability to communicate these laws and practices to residents of the City and surrounding areas, especially within designated school districts.

Knowledge of the City's organizational structure and its function in safety, traffic, and emergency situations.

Ability to see, hear, stand, jump, run, grasp, hold up arms, lift twenty pounds and endure inclement weather with temperature extremes. Combined physical and cognitive ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles. The ability to control a STOP paddle effectively. Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously. Knowledge and ability to engage in public speaking which includes preparation and delivery (voice, grammar, etc.) and handling questions of groups of all ages.

Ability to assist with snow and ice removal from the pedestrian access routes when necessary.

Ability to operate as a member of a team. Ability to relate positively with children. Ability to remain objective and patient.

Crossing Guards should also possess the following minimum qualifications to effectively perform their duties and responsibilities:

Average intelligence;

Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles;

Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury;

Mental alertness;

Neat appearance;

Good character;

Regular and predictable on-site attendance required;

Dependability; and

An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.

A high school education and a valid Ohio driver's license are required as is dependable transportation to and from designated work locations. Prior experience in working with children, involvement in traffic safety and life safety related programs is preferred.
