Job summary

Kentwood Public Schools is seeking a Crossing Guard to help prepare crossing zones and assist students as they travel to and from school on a seasonal basis.

The role requires attentiveness to traffic, punctual attendance, and the ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, and school staff. Strong knowledge of Michigan traffic laws and safety procedures is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Knowledge of Michigan traffic laws and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Escort children across streets as they arrive at school, watching traffic and stopping cars as needed.
  • Repeat the crossing process twice daily, for arrival and dismissal.
  • Act as liaison between children, parents, school staff, and PTA.
  • Participate in school events as requested by administrators or PTA.
  • Maintain physical activity as part of the role and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Job description

Position: Crossing Guard
Position Purpose: Responsible for preparing crossing zone and assists children in crossing streets safely on a seasonal basis while children attend school.
Essential Job Functions

  • As children arrive, takes them safely across the street, watching traffic closely and stopping cars if necessary.
  • Process is repeated 2 times a day, when children travel to and from school.
  • Acts as a liaison between children, parents, school administrators, and P.T.A.
  • Participates in special events as asked by school administrators and/or P.T.A.
  • Physical activity is required as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of current Michigan traffic laws, emergency procedures, correct use of the English language
  • Moderate responsibility for the care, condition and use of materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Great responsibility for the use of discretion and independent judgment in the safe crossing of children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, parents, and school employees.
  • Ability to use accurate judgement of traffic flow, speed and direction of travel.
  • Ability to prioritize activities.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
  • Regular use of hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, and cones.

  • Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
