Job summary

Ephraim City is seeking a School Crossing Guard to supervise and assist children crossing streets near school zones. You will direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic and ensure safe crossing for students during arrival and dismissal times.

Responsibilities include escorting children, noticing traffic violations, reporting issues, and assisting the Police Department as needed. Training will be provided, with outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to demonstrate aptitude for crossing guard duties.
• Must pass the School Crossing Guard Safety Training Course.
• Ability to walk, stand, and work outdoors in varying weather.

Responsibilities

• Directs traffic and pedestrians at school crossing zones.
• Escorts children safely across streets.
• Maintains crossing zone and observes traffic; reports violators.
• Coordinates with Police Department and provides assistance as needed.
• Ensures equipment maintenance.
• Reports problems to department and ensures time sheets are submitted accurately.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs routine traffic control dutiesat crosswalks and follows established traffic control procedures to assure the safety of students and pedestrians crossing roadways.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of Police Department Personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Directs traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, through designated school crossing zone; escorts children across the street; steps onto cross designated crossing zone, remains in the center of zone throughout pedestrian traffic flow; returns to the side of the street, directing the continuation of through vehicular traffic.

Observes actions of vehicular traffic through crossing zone, notes violators and reports to Police Officer; observes behaviors and activities of persons in the proximity of school grounds for inappropriate/illegal activities, reports to the appropriate person(s); provides assistance and escorts children across streets; provides information and assistance to children upon request or as needed.

Ensures proper maintenance of equipment; replaces old or worn equipment as necessary.

Informs police department of any problems; requests needed supplies; ensures payroll time sheets are submitted promptly and accurately.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:

A. High school or sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above duties; above and related duties;

AND

B. Sufficient experience to demonstrate ability;

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of local traffic laws and of parking ordinances ; basic traffic safety; basic first aid; basic interpersonal communication skills; the operation of traffic signalization equipment and semaphores.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must pass the approved School Crossing Guard Safety Training Course within a time period specified by department operating procedures.

Tasks require a variety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Essential functions require talking, hearing, and seeing. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking. Elements of the job pose various degrees of hazard uncertainty common to work in the public right of way. C ommon eye, hand, and finger dexterity is required to perform essential functions. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
