Job description

Critical Systems Foreman – Building Services Department

Performs routine work in cleaning/sanitizing assigned areas of a school building following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Under limited supervision, also responsible for floor maintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the immediate perimeter of the building. Shiftwork may be required.

General Definition Of Work

Performs skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and installation of critical electrical systems including fire alarm systems, security alarm systems, access control systems, security entry equipment, panic buttons, emergency generators, and intercom systems. Provides supervision over semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Maintains acceptable attendance. Designated as “Essential Personnel” and may be on call 24/7 for emergency situations such as weather or building emergencies.

Essential Functions

• Use fire alarm systems knowledge and specific software to operate, program, and troubleshoot the system.
• Serve as expert and main point of contact for security alarm systems, access control systems, security entry equipment, panic buttons, emergency generators, security cameras, and intercom systems.
• Conduct training with administrative staff at schools on critical safety systems.
• Participate in crisis preparedness exercises with administrative staff.
• Respond to all calls related to fire alarm systems, intercom systems, security systems, and cameras.
• Install, maintain, and repair electrical power and lighting lines, cables, and associated parts of circuits.
• Install and maintain switches, outlets, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, meters, light fixtures, electrical motors, public address, and fire alarm systems.
• Provide electrical connections for machinery, install motors, electrical welding machines, and similar equipment.
• Inspect and test equipment, electrical control, and safety devices.
• Establish appropriate safe practices for self, personnel in schools, and personnel under supervision at job sites.
• Use knowledge of software programs to operate, troubleshoot and manipulate the systems.
• Coordinate with Technology Department to obtain IP addresses to install/troubleshoot security cameras as well as troubleshoot camera system.
• Perform installation/termination of data drops for computer and IP phone connectivity.
• Provide security system troubleshooting involving access to the program, troubleshooting zones for defective devices and/or cabling, and diagnosing the operation of the system.
• Move snow during the winter.
• Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in installing and repairing electrical wiring systems, controls, and electrical machinery and equipment in buildings. Knowledge of the appropriate Electrical Code, city or state inspection and safety requirements. Ability to diagnose and correct electrical power, lighting, or communications failures; perform field or shop repair on electrical equipment; follow oral and written instructions.

Education and Experience

High school or vocational school completion with extensive experience as a general electrician supplemented by coursework in an electrical field. Must obtain a valid electrical license within six months of employment. Possess a valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must pass negative drug screening and tuberculin tests.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Strenuous physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending or stooping, working in confined spaces, lifting or carrying items weighing 20–50 pounds, occasional lifting over 100 pounds. Operation of gasoline, diesel, or electric-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls or fine adjustments. Exposure to potentially disabling or non-disabling injuries or illnesses. Communicates with internal and external personnel and the general public. Ability to troubleshoot and program special systems including PA systems, fire alarm systems, security systems, camera systems, and high voltage electrical experience (277/480).
