Under the general direction of a supervisor, perform complex tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Inspect, test, modify, program and repair automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Perform advanced troubleshooting of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Assist other trades as needed, adhere to all safety practices and procedures, clean and maintain work areas and equipment, attend meetings, properly complete documentation, provide a high level of customer service, and communicate to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods. Operate department vehicle and perform other assigned duties. Actively support the university’s commitment to integrity and personal accountability.
Lead a team of facilities technicians. Mentor, train and provide technical expertise to other staff. Distribute work orders in supervisor’s absence. Respond to emergency situations and evaluate and correct defects. Identify, communicate, coordinate and complete projects and work performed in the assigned area(s). Operate department vehicle and perform other duties as assigned. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need. May work overtime and is subject to a 24‑hour emergency call.
Lead a team of technicians. Mentor and train technicians. Facilitate on‑the‑job training. Coordinate work performed in assigned area. Lead projects.
Technical Support: Ensure areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Document regulatory compliance tests. Facilitate building walk‑throughs with key stakeholders. Inspect and test installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards. Become knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfer that knowledge to other staff. Update building drawings. Locate, identify, disable and enable local utility shut‑offs. Generate permits (e.g., above ceiling, burn, penetration). Troubleshoot and resolve field problems. Participate on emergency response teams.
Communication / Recordkeeping: Document labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Submit material and equipment purchase requests. Provide feedback on materials. Create estimates for small projects. Inform customers when tasks are completed. Initiate work order escalation when needed.
Other Departmental Duties: Participate in professional development/continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Interact with and assist other areas and staff within the department. Participate in meetings, trainings and orientations. May participate on committees. Perform other duties as assigned.
Ability to read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as‑built drawings; read, understand and apply safety standards and practices; read, interpret and apply technical manuals and system specifications; follow applicable trade specific codes, standards and regulations; learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems; use resistance and power equations; select and use hand, power and machine tools; locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut‑offs; establish and maintain interpersonal relationships; maintain a clean and safe work environment; perform basic arithmetic; instruct and teach others; provide guidance and expert advice; estimate resources; manage small projects; perform quality control analysis; provide customer service; plan and prioritize work; manage resources; build teams.
High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years’ experience in electrical or electronic systems with a minimum of one year analyzing, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic equipment and circuits, electrical and electronic logic circuits and/or computer hardware, software, and microprocessor controlled equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; obtain the following during probationary period: valid OSHA 30‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card, basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment, and basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction; successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in at least three of the following technical specialties: branch circuitry, electronic systems, electrical distribution systems, pneumatic transport systems, and fire alarm systems. May require valid State of Ohio driver license.
Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field.
Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.
May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post‑offer process.
