Position Overview: As a Criminal Justice Planner in the Division of Statewide Services, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of criminal justice information services. You will provide policy development and direction for two statewide programs within the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Program: The Criminal Records unit and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) unit. Your expertise will ensure that these programs meet state and federal requirements, and your leadership will guide staff to achieve excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Policy Development and Direction: Lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Criminal Records and NICS units, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws.

  • Staff Supervision and Mentorship: Supervise and mentor a dedicated team, providing guidance and support to help them excel in their roles.

  • Program Analysis and Performance Evaluation: Conduct ongoing program analysis to measure and evaluate performance, making adjustments as needed to meet statutory requirements.
  • Collaboration and Outreach: Work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure the seamless integration of criminal justice information systems, benefiting the entire criminal justice system, employment and licensing agencies, and the public.

T HE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

This position is located in East Anchorage in the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Headquarters building located at 5700 East Tudor Road. Individual office space for this position is co-located with direct report staff to encourage team building and collaborative efforts. The Chugach Mountains provide the backdrop for the building and ample parking is available; public transportation drop points are located directly in front of the building and paved trails are located right next to the building.

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible experience in social work, criminal justice, law, sociology, psychology, political science, planning, business, public administration, or a closely related field performing law enforcement or adjudication, corrections, adult or juvenile justice, or crime prevention.

    This position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, a security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application or security clearance.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
