Job summary

The Village of Glen Ellyn Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Crew Leader I or II to supervise and perform skilled maintenance on water, sewer, and related infrastructure. This role leads staff, coordinates equipment and materials, and responds to emergencies while ensuring safe work practices.

Eligible candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent; CDL class B is required, with A preferred. Prior supervisory experience in utilities is highly desired.

Qualifications

• CLI requires 3–5 years in underground utilities; CLII requires 6+ years with 3 in a supervisory role.
• Valid driver’s license Class B CDL, with air brake or ability to obtain; CDL A preferred.

DESCRIPTION

The Village of Glen Ellyn Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates for one (1) full-time Crew Leader I or Crew Leader II position in the Utilities Division. The selected candidate will serve as a working lead responsible for coordinating and performing skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and emergency response work involving the Village’s water distribution system, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, lift stations, snow and ice removal and related departmental emergencies. This position performs substantial hands‑on field work while also leading assigned staff, organizing daily work activities, coordinating equipment and materials, maintaining records, responding to resident concerns, safe work practices, and contractor oversight.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Plans, schedules, prioritizes, organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the daily work of assigned staff performing maintenance activities; contributes to the development of yearly project schedules.
• Perform skilled maintenance, repair, installation, inspection, and construction work on water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, drainage, lift stations, and related public infrastructure systems.
• Operate a variety of vehicles, specialized tools and heavy‑duty equipment properly & safely.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, including time, material and other applicable data.
• Participate in afterhours callout rotation, lead and participate in water main break, sewer backup, drainage issues, snow and ice operations responses, and other emergency activities.
• Evaluate employee work performance and be able to coach and develop employees.
• Prepare and implement snow removal operations, including plowing and salting of streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and alleys in accordance with the snow and ice removal plan.
• Provide and effectively respond to customer service requests by resolving complaints or concerns.
• Coordinate, monitor, and report on contractor work and assist with questions and concerns.
• Perform related duties as assigned including assisting other divisions in fulfilling responsibilities in the absence of another crew leader, on an as needed basis.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possession of a college degree or advanced training is preferred. For CLI, three to five (3-5) years of experience in underground utilities, for CLII the expectation six plus (6+) years’ experience, with three (3) of those in a supervisory role.

Required License: Valid driver’s license of a Class ‘B’ CDL, with air brake or ability to obtain within a defined period; current possession or ability to obtain a CDL ‘A’ preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Ability to operate various types of heavy‑duty tools and equipment including backhoe, loader, skid steer, and snowplow trucks and equipment. Completion or ability to complete the IL Public Service Institute program. Any water or sewer certifications is a plus. NIMS 100, 700, and 800 certification or ability to obtain.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 75 pounds), grasping, pulling/pushing, twisting, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, occasional typing, and repetitive motions. Employees occasionally work around vibrations and noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and underground trenches, heights, and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme outdoor temperatures. Work environment is primarily outdoors in various types of weather conditions, with occasional indoor work.

WORK SCHEDULE

The general work schedule is Monday‑Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must be able to respond to after‑hours call‑backs and be prepared for and confront emergency conditions as necessary.

SALARY/BENEFITS

The hourly pay range for CLI is $33.44-46.81 and for CLII $35.09-49.12. Starting pay will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
