The Opportunity
This is a hands-on management role focused on turning completed work and delivered materials into accurate billing, timely approvals and collected cash.
You will investigate overdue accounts, resolve payment obstacles, secure commitments and coordinate follow-through across Accounting, Sales, Project Management and Operations. Success requires persistence, sound judgment and the ability to maintain productive customer relationships while holding people accountable.
Responsibilities

- Establish effective relationships with customer accounting teams and the people responsible for payment approval and release.
- Resolve invoice discrepancies, missing documentation, rejected payment applications, disputed charges, unapproved changes and other payment obstacles.
- Coordinate timely, accurate submission and acceptance of invoices and construction payment applications.
- Work with project teams on schedules of values, change orders, retainage, releases and closeout requirements.
- Pursue payment of approved, undisputed balances while coordinating resolution of remaining issues.
- Maintain account action plans showing amounts due, obstacles, responsible parties, commitments and next steps.
- Prepare reliable collection forecasts and report actual receipts against commitments.
- Support credit reviews and recommend account limits, payment terms or escalation actions within established approval procedures.
- Coordinate with Legal on notices, lien/bond matters and collection referrals.
- Improve billing and collection processes and guide supporting staff.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of progressive in-house commercial credit, billing, accounts receivable or collections experience, including responsibility for difficult accounts and coordination across departments.
- Strong preference for construction, specialty contracting, manufacturing or building-material supply experience.
- Demonstrated results collecting overdue receivables and resolving billing or payment disputes while preserving customer relationships.
- Working knowledge of construction payment applications, change orders, retainage, releases and related documentation.
- Strong negotiation, communication, organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to work effectively with customer accounting teams, project managers, general contractors, owners and executives.
- Proficiency with Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
- Ability to lead through consistent follow-through and practical problem-solving.
Experience managing ongoing business-to-business customer relationships is essential. Consumer debt collection or collection-agency experience alone does not qualify for this position.
