Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Active Virginia Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician credential; PTCB preferred.
  • Experience in community/retail/outpatient pharmacy.
  • Immunization administration certification and CPR/BLS.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver warm, compassionate customer service in every interaction.
  • Support safe hospital transitions with Meds2Beds rounding.
  • Obtain and complete discharge medication orders with nurses and care managers.
  • Assist patients with curbside pickup, home delivery, and retail transactions.

Commonshare is seeking an energetic, compassionate, and dependable Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) to join our mission-driven outpatient pharmacy team. This position combines pharmacy operations, patient service, prescription fulfillment, medication inventory, community outreach, and hospital-based Meds2Beds support.

The ideal candidate brings a positive, “can-do” attitude and treats every patient, caregiver, prescriber, hospital employee, and visitor with patience and respect. Key Responsibilities
Patient Service and Pharmacy Growth
  • Deliver warm, compassionate customer service during every interaction.
  • Conduct Meds2Beds rounding with hospital nursing units to support safe transitions from hospital to home.
  • Coordinate with nurses and care managers to obtain and complete discharge medication orders.
  • Contact existing patients regarding prescription refills, medication adherence, and updated prescriber information.
  • Communicate with physician offices to understand patient needs and explain Commonshare’s pharmacy services.
  • Assist patients with curbside pickup, Meds2Beds delivery, and home-delivery services.
  • Process pharmacy, gift shop, and retail transactions accurately.
  • Assist hospital visitors with gift shop merchandise and other retail needs.
Pharmacy Technician Duties
  • Complete patient intake, eligibility, and demographic verification.
  • Accurately enter prescriptions and patient information into the Pioneer pharmacy management system.
  • Maintain complete patient profiles, including allergies, insurance information, third-party billing details, and clinical notes.
  • Enter and verify required customer information for controlled-substance transactions using Pioneer or required logbooks.
  • Prepare, fill, label, and package prescriptions under pharmacist supervision.
  • Ensure prescription labels contain the correct medication directions, or SIG.
  • Review prescription information while filling to confirm the correct medication, strength, dosage form, quantity, and patient.
  • Resolve common insurance claim rejections independently and elevate concerns when appropriate.
  • Prioritize prescriptions based on patient needs and communicate urgent requests to the pharmacist on duty.
  • Process prescriptions in accordance with federal and Virginia pharmacy laws and regulations.
  • Assist with vaccination services within the technician’s training, certification, and authorized scope of practice.
Inventory and Delivery Support
  • Receive, organize, count, and maintain prescription and retail inventory.
  • Perform medication cycle counts and investigate inventory discrepancies.
  • Identify products requiring reorder and communicate purchasing needs.
  • Select the correct medication and package size for each prescription.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and orderly pharmacy workstations, shelving, and retail areas.
  • Package, label, and ship prescriptions for home delivery.
  • Assist with local medication delivery, curbside service, and Meds2Beds activities as assigned.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Regularly update the pharmacist and team members regarding workload and prescription status.
  • Coordinate meal periods and work breaks with the pharmacist on duty.
  • Communicate outstanding work and patient needs during shift transitions.
  • Use professional telephone etiquette with patients, healthcare providers, hospital staff, and coworkers.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings, pharmacy discussions, and training.
  • Recommend practical improvements to pharmacy procedures, workflow, and patient service.
  • Adapt effectively in a growing, mission-oriented pharmacy environment.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Active Virginia Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician credential; PTCB certification preferred.
  • Previous community, retail, outpatient, or specialty pharmacy experience.
  • Pharmacy technician immunization administration certificate.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully complete required criminal background checks, including a Virginia State Police background check.
  • Ability to work approximately 30 hours per week, including every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, communication skills, and commitment to patient confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hospital or health-system pharmacy experience.
  • Experience with PioneerRx or another pharmacy management system.
  • Experience with Meds2Beds, discharge prescriptions, prescription delivery, insurance billing, inventory management, or vaccination services.
  • Familiarity with controlled-substance documentation requirements.
