Responsibilities

  • Process new and refill prescriptions with accurate data entry.
  • Prepare, count, label, and package medications for pharmacist verification.
  • Handle prescription pickups, payments, and POS transactions.
  • Assist patients with savings or assistance programs and refer issues to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain organized records and inventory, including 340B activities and recalls.
  • Provide courteous patient service and protect privacy in all interactions.
  • Adhere to HIPAA, safety, and compliance requirements.

Job description

General Description:

Under the direction and guidance of the Pharmacist In Charge, the Pharmacy Technician supports the safe, accurate, efficient, and patient-centered operation of HRCHC’s pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician assists with prescription processing, medication preparation, third-party billing, inventory management, 340B activities, point-of-sale transactions, and patient service.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not have direct reports.

Essential Functions:
Pharmacy Operations
  • Receive and process new and refill prescriptions and accurately enter patient, prescriber, medication, and insurance information.
  • Prepare, count, package, and label medications for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintain an organized prescription workflow and support timely dispensing.
  • Process prescription pickups, payments, and point-of-sale transactions.
  • Refer medication counseling, clinical questions, discrepancies, and potential medication errors to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain accurate pharmacy records and a clean, organized, secure, and inspection-ready work area.
Insurance and Patient Assistance
  • Process prescription claims through Medicaid, Medicare Part D, commercial insurance, and other third-party payers.
  • Troubleshoot routine claim rejections, including coverage, refill, demographic, coordination-of-benefits, and prior authorization issues.
  • Assist patients with approved prescription savings or assistance programs.
  • Escalate unresolved billing, coverage, or clinical issues to the pharmacist.
Inventory and 340B
  • Receive, verify, store, rotate, and maintain medication and pharmacy supply inventory.
  • Monitor stock levels, expiration dates, shortages, recalls, and storage requirements.
  • Assist with inventory counts, reconciliation, medication returns, credits, and reverse distribution.
Patient Service
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and professional service to patients.
  • Assist with prescription pickup, refill requests, payments, and non-clinical pharmacy questions.
  • Verify appropriate patient information before releasing prescriptions.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
Compliance and Team Responsibilities
  • Perform duties within the legally permitted scope of practice for a Pharmacy Technician and maintain required registration/certification.
  • Comply with applicable pharmacy laws, HIPAA, controlled-substance requirements, 340B procedures, and HRCHC policies.
  • Immediately report medication errors, patient safety concerns, privacy breaches, or suspected compliance violations.
  • Complete required pharmacy, compliance, HIPAA, safety, and 340B training.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to medication accuracy and patient safety.
  • Accuracy, accountability, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while supporting HRCHC’s mission of improving access to affordable healthcare and medications.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy terminology, prescription processing, and insurance billing.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet all current Commonwealth of Virginia requirements to work as a Pharmacy Technician and maintain required credentials throughout employment.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) preferred.
  • Community pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Experience with third-party prescription billing, 340B operations, or an FQHC/community health center preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform routine pharmacy duties.
  • Ability to sit, bend, stoop, reach, and occasionally lift or move supplies, medications, and equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 25-30 pounds, as needed.
  • Ability to perform in fast-paced pharmacy environment with frequent patient interaction, interruptions, and competing priorities and must maintain accuracy, confidentiality, professionalism, and patient safety.
