Job summary

NC State University in Windsor, NC is seeking a County Extension Director to lead the county Extension program in partnership with NC A&T State University. The role oversees administration, policy issues, and community development, with budgeting, staffing, and program marketing responsibilities.

The candidate will hold a Master’s degree (or a Bachelor’s with 10+ years of Extension experience) and must have strong leadership and supervisory skills, plus a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration, with at least 3 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 10 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar experience. If a candidate’s Bachelor’s degree requires less than 10 years of experience, the candidate must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate program and complete the degree within one year of hire.
  • Administrative and supervisory experience, including human resources, fiscal resource management and external relations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program.

  • Coordinate and secure resource development for all program areas.
  • Market Extension programs and impacts.
  • Build collaborative relationships with county government, agencies, schools, local officials, and university partners.

  • Prepare budgets, allocate resources and manage staff.
  • Interpret and communicate policy, teach, evaluate and report on Extension programs in the county.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and align staff work responsibilities.
  • Travel within the district and occasionally outside the district, as required.

Position Type: 12‑Month recurring, full‑time , 0.9375 FTE

Overview

The County Extension Director is the leadership position responsible for coordinating and leading the county Extension staff to develop an effective total county Extension educational program in cooperation with North Carolina A&T State University’s Cooperative Extension Program. The role entails administration, public policy issues, community development, staffing, budgeting and program marketing, and serves as the administrative leader for the county Extension program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Minimum Experience / Education
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration, with at least 3 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 10 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar experience. If a candidate’s Bachelor’s degree requires less than 10 years of experience, the candidate must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate program and complete the degree within one year of hire.
Preferred
  • Administrative and supervisory experience, including human resources, fiscal resource management and external relations.
  • Demonstrated leadership in Extension programming and management.
  • Supervisory experience and skills in human relations, negotiation, public relations and team building.
  • Experience in securing and managing outside funding and resources to develop innovative educational programming.
  • Background in Agriculture, Family & Consumer Science or 4‑H Youth Development (preferred but not required).
Required License or Certification

Valid Driver’s License and reliable personal transportation required. Must be maintained within 60 days of hire.

Work Schedule

8:30 am - 5:00 pm, evenings and weekends as required.
