Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, vocational, career, personal, and guidance counseling for AFFIRM students.
  • Provide walk‑in counseling and coordinate with the program specialist on Early Alert efforts.
  • Coordinate counseling components to meet SSSP mandates across orientation, cohorts, and counseling.
  • Serve as liaison with high schools, mentors, community‑based organizations, and four‑year colleges/universities.
  • Refer students to campus and community resources and services as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with AFFIRM instructors to develop and evaluate outreach and retention strategies.
  • Participate in district and college meetings and maintain posted office hours.
  • Maintain current course syllabi and participate in program assessments and outcomes.

Education

Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling.
Bachelor’s degree in one of the above areas with a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).

Position Status: Full Time

Salary Range: $110,451 to $151,619 (Entry Level Annual Salary, Academic Salary Schedule 2026-2027). Maximum potential $196,722.

Position Summary

The faculty position is a full‑time, 100% FTE temporary one‑year classification (11 months, Aug–Jun) that may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the academic calendar. The position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide academic, vocational, career, personal, and guidance counseling for new, continuing, and prospective AFFIRM students.
  2. Provide walk‑in counseling and work with the program specialist on Early Alert efforts.
  3. Coordinate counseling components such as probation/dismissal, orientation, outreach, online counseling, online orientation, student cohorts, etc. to meet SSSP mandates.
  4. Participate in outreach functions, including serving as a liaison with high schools, mentors, community‑based organizations, and four‑year colleges/universities.
  5. Refer students to campus and community resources and services as appropriate.
  6. Collaborate with AFFIRM instructors and the program specialist to develop, implement, and evaluate outreach and retention strategies.
  7. Visit AFFIRM classes and attend AFFIRM program campus and community activities; assume general counseling responsibilities as assigned.
  8. Participate in the implementation of the District‑wide Student Success Plan, including admissions, multiple measures, orientations, counseling, and follow‑up components.
  9. Participate in student learning outcomes (SLO) of guidance courses, Service Area Outcomes, and assessment activities.
  10. Teach courses in the assigned discipline, communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
  11. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
  12. Demonstrate commitment to professional development through conferences, workshops, seminars, professional memberships, research projects, publications, and statewide committee participation.
  13. Demonstrate sensitivity when working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic, socio‑economic, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability backgrounds.
  14. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes, assessment, program review, committees, research, and special projects.
  15. Attend and participate in department, division, and college meetings; keep posted office hours.
  16. Meet record‑keeping obligations on time, including grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.
  17. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.
  18. Foster a professional work and learning environment.
  19. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling.
  • OR a Bachelor's degree in one of the above areas with a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
