COUNSELOR, EXTENDED OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM & SERVICES (EOP&S), CARE

Position Summary
This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE temporary, one‑year, categorical, non‑tenured teaching and counseling role in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation at San Jose City College. The EOPS/CARE Counselor provides academic, career, personal, and crisis counseling; assists with course placement, develops educational plans, guides students through general education and transfer coursework, implements progress reporting, manages caseloads, and follows up on students’ success. Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities, and some workdays may be scheduled outside the academic calendar. The position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide academic, vocational, career, and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new, and continuing students in EOPS/CARE.
• Work with the EOPS/CARE caseload to develop abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans to meet EOPS requirements.
• Provide intake, orientation, program advisement, follow‑up services, and group or individual counseling for EOPS/CARE students, addressing issues such as textbook loans, childcare, and transportation.
• Assist students with early enrollment, priority registration, and referrals to community agencies or services.
• Assist students in making decisions related to career choice and educational planning, including testing and vocational counseling in accordance with CARE, TANF/GAIN, and pertinent policies.
• Advocate for students by applying knowledge to engage county and community-based service providers.
• Participate in program outreach to social services agencies and the community for recruitment and collaboration.
• Develop working relationships with faculty and cooperate with SAS, DSPS, Financial Aid, ALMASS, NextUp/Guardian Scholars, and Veterans Resource Center.
• Assist in developing CARE‑related publications and presenting workshops, course materials, program reviews, and SLOs.
• Teach courses in the assigned discipline, communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
• Adapt teaching methodologies for students with special needs and diverse learning styles.
• Engage in professional development through conferences, workshops, seminars, professional organization membership, research projects, and statewide committees.
• Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students of diverse backgrounds, orientations, and disabilities.
• Participate in faculty responsibilities such as course and curriculum development, student learning outcomes, program reviews, committees, research, and special projects.
• Attend and participate in department, division, and college meetings and maintain posted office hours.
• Meet record‑keeping obligations on time, including grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.
• Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.
• Foster a professional work and learning environment.
• Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, or Career Development.
• For EOPS counselors hired after October 24 1987:
  • Completed at least nine semester units of college coursework related to ethnic minorities or students disadvantaged by language, social, or economic factors, or six semester units or equivalent counseling practicum/field‑work courses in a community‑college EOPS program.
  • Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or disadvantaged students.

Desired Qualifications

• Bilingual ability in English and Spanish, or Vietnamese.

• Experience working with CARE and CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN students or other special populations.
• Counseling experience within a California community college.
