Job summary

Virginia Department of Corrections is seeking a Corrections Sergeant at State Farm Correctional Center to provide first-line supervision of Corrections Officers and Trainees. The position supports the public safety mission by guiding staff on an institutional shift to maintain a safe, secure environment.

The role requires DCJS certification, a high school diploma, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to read policies, prepare reports, and follow instructions. Fluency in Spanish is desired.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Current DCJS certification.
• Working knowledge of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
• Ability to organize, plan, schedule and supervise the work of others.
• Ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities

• Provide first line supervision to Corrections Officers and Corrections Officer Trainees in an institutional setting.
• Supervise and monitor staff on assigned shift to ensure a safe and secure environment.
• Communicate with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public.
• Lead and counsel staff; complete required training; maintain a safe and productive workforce.
