Job summary

Pennington County Sheriff's Office seeks a hardworking Correctional Officer 1 to ensure the safety and custody of inmates in a 24/7 facility. The role requires handling high-stress situations, performing rounds, and documenting incidents with attention to protocol.

Applicants must complete the required academy and on-the-job trainings, hold a high school diploma or GED, and possess or obtain a SD driver’s license within 90 days of moving. No felony convictions are allowed.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 20 years old at time of employment offer.
• Successful completion of the in-house 120-hour academy training program.
• Successful completion of the 240-hour Correctional Officer on-the-job training program.
• OC spray certification and taser are required.
• No felony convictions.
• Must meet minimum hiring assessment standards (physical agility, written exam, background, psych).
• Possession of or ability to obtain a South Dakota Driver’s License within 90 days of moving to SD.

Responsibilities

• Perform security rounds and document incidents, movements, rounds and inmate/detainee discipline.
• Create and maintain a safe, secure cell block/pod atmosphere.
• Determine disciplinary actions and enforce with inmates/detainees.
• Initiate and monitor inmate/detainee movement and restrain when necessary.
• Classify inmates/detainees to housing unit and security level.
• Respond to mental health behaviors and suicide precautions.
• Read and process legal and non-legal documents.
• Communicate with the public, staff, inmates/detainees, and in court.
• Attend shift briefings, department meetings, and required training.
• Perform related duties and maintain county policies and procedures.
