Job summary

Pennington County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated Correctional Officer 1 to ensure the care and custody of inmates/detainees. The role requires calm, professional handling of daily duties and potential high-stress situations.

This position operates 24/7 with day, evening, overnight, weekend and holiday shifts. You will perform rounds, enforce rules, assist in housing classifications and support mental health interventions as needed.

Qualifications

• You must be at least 20 years old at the time of employment offer.
• Completion of the in-house 120-hour academy training program.
• Completion of the 240-hour correctional officer on-the-job training program.
• OC spray certification and taser training required.
• No felony convictions on record.
• Must meet the hiring assessment standards including physical agility and exams.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a SD driver’s license within 90 days of moving.

Responsibilities

• Perform security rounds and document incidents, movement and discipline.
• Maintain a safe cell block atmosphere conducive to respect for others.
• Determine disciplinary actions and document outcomes.
• Manage inmate/detainee movement and apply restraints as trained.
• Classify inmates/detainees to housing units and security levels.
• Respond to mental health behaviors and risk factors; implement interventions as needed.
• Read and process legal and non-legal documents.
• Communicate effectively with the public, staff, and in court.
