Job summary

Join the field of Correctional Nursing at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Yankton, SD. This part-time position works three 12-hour shifts per week with a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays, offering $35.00 to $40.00 per hour, plus night/weekend differential and potential overtime.

Applicants must hold a current RN license and be capable of maintaining inmate medical records accurately. Full state benefits and SDRS retirement are included for qualified state employees.

Qualifications

• Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Ability to effectively treat patients daily in various settings.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Document in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive inmate medical records.
• Transcribe reports at change of shifts.
• Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
• Preserve confidentiality.
• Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, and assist with treatment plans.
• Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with procedures.
• Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
• May assist in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
• Observe and report changes in patients’ condition and treatment effectiveness.
• Perform assessments during triage, sick call, and emergencies.
• Promote safety and security in the clinical environment.
• Operate clinical equipment as available.
• Attend training programs including CPR and self-defense.
