THE POSITION

Do you want to share your masonry experience as a Corrections Masonry Trade Instructor with the Department of Corrections? This opportunity lets you teach trade practices that support vocational development and productive routines at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Laurel Highlands. You will guide inmates through structured lessons and supervised work assignments. Step into a position where your instruction promotes safety, responsibility, and skill-building.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on providing masonry instruction and directing inmate work crews in both classroom and jobsite settings. It also includes maintaining documentation, issuing materials, and supporting daily training schedules.

As a Corrections Masonry Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

• Skill Instruction: Teach masonry practices, methods, and procedures during classroom and on-the-job training
• Work Crew Direction: Supervise inmate crews, assign daily tasks, and inspect completed work assignments
• Training Documentation: Record attendance, progress, and assignment details for all training activities
• Material Oversight: Issue tools, track inventory, and conduct searches to ensure all items are accounted for
• Resource Planning: Identify needed supplies and submit purchase requests for materials and tools
• Classroom Management: Maintain order and discipline to support a safe and structured learning environment

WORK SCHEDULE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
• Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Four years of experience in laying brick, blocks, and other types of building materials, and binding with mortar to construct or repair walls; or
• Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the masonry trade; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the masonry trade.

Other Requirements:

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
