Job summary

NC Department of Adult Correction seeks a Correctional Sergeant I (S) to supervise subordinate officers in a male offender facility with minimum/medium/close custody levels. You will assign posts, conduct line-ups, and ensure operational readiness of equipment and funds.

You will complete time reports, leave schedules, evaluations, and related administrative forms while working rotating shifts on state benefits. Candidates meeting minimum qualifications are preferred.

Description of Work

Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager II, this position provides supervision for subordinate officers regarding their assigned tasks with male offenders in a Minimum/Medium/Close custody state correctional facility. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post
  • Supervising and assigning subordinate officers to a particular area or post.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Responsible for subordinate officers' activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
  • Working rotating and various duty assignments within the defined level of work.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Knowledge of facility operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons’s policy and procedures.

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

This is a full-time position working rotating shifts with State Benefits.

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, North Carolina and houses up to 700 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.
