Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Supervisory security position to oversee shift personnel, coordinate security operations, and ensure the safety of inmates and staff.

You will conduct shift briefings, review activities, perform routine and non-routine security checks, and investigate inmate complaints as required. You must obtain SCDC certification and complete the basic supervisory course within six months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; related experience acceptable.
• Bachelor's degree may substitute for the required experience.
• 18 months of correctional, security, military, or police experience.
• Degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Certification by the SCDC training academy required.
• Must complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Supervise security personnel on assigned shift.
• Assist with employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, and counseling.
• Assist with shift briefings for officers.
• Remain familiar with shift activities to inform subordinates of changes.
• Perform routine and non-routine security checks of areas.
• Conduct formal and informal inmate counts.
• Investigate inmate complaints and counsel inmates as required.
• Monitor inmate movement within the institution; perform related duties.

Education

High school diploma

Bachelor's degree may substitute for experience

18 months experience in correctional/security/police

Degree may substitute for half of required experience

SCDC training academy certification

Basic supervisory course within 6 months
